Looks great, how come the existing Panamera doesn't look like this?

Because the existing Panamera is designed to have a comfortable amount of headroom in the back. I've read repeatedly that the much-maligned rear end is a direct result of the department head wanting a four-door car that would work for 6'+ passengers. Headroom (seat to ceiling measurement) in the back is 38", which is 3" more than the much more sedan-like Tesla Model S.

Frankly, I'd rather have the car in the photo and less headroom. But keep in mind that not only is it a concept car, and thus not necessarily what we'll get, but it's also a computer render, not an actual photo. Porsche only seems to have released computer renders, and there are no car show photos of an actual car.

Yes, quite rare.

I knew the Tesla Model S did quite poorly at the ring, due to battery overheating issues. Further research, though, revealed that a couple of production electric cars have done under 8 minutes before - the Audi R8 e-tron and the Mercedes SLS AMG electric drive. So it's not really so much an intrinsic engineering problem so much as Tesla-specific shortcoming.

Which is kind of interesting, since Tesla keeps making such a point of drag-race numbers for the model S, both the P85 and P85D. It says they don't actually care about overall performance, just numbers they think will sell cars to Americans.

Anyway, it's kind of nice to know that you can get sustained performance out of a properly-engineered electric car. The next question is, if it ever makes it to market, what sort of price tag it will carry. The other cars I mentioned were north of $500k each.

That is not the Panamera replacement it's an all electric car concept they may bring to market to go up against Tesla.

"We remain skeptical about the distance Porsche is maintaining between this electric concept and the next-generation Panamera sedan. Von Platen remained firm about this car being separate from any existing Porsche, however. (Though the keyword might be "existing," and whether that includes only current versions of the range)."

IMHO Porsche's position is still not 100% clear.

I agree, we have no idea whether they intend to bring this to market, or whether the rumored mid-size car will look anything like this.

That NY Daily News link is highly useful, though, because it has the first actual photos of a physical car I've seen. The problem with CGI images is that a lot of enthusiasts cook up similar looking stuff that could never be made because the artists have no engineering limitations.

I strongly suspect that despite having four doors, the rear passenger compartment is very cramped. Which is OK by me; I'm just pointing out that, aside from the obvious power plant difference, there are other practical differences between this and a Panamera.

Looking at this, one thought that crosses my mind is: what happens when you lift the hood? There'sa definite line for a hood, but I can't see the sides, just the line in front. Does it have a frunk, like the Model S, or is ths space taken up by batteries? One thing about electric drive trains is that they don't take up much space, even if the batteries do.

Default Porsche understatement

Mission E is more than a concept car. We know that Porsche is not given to exaggeration. My guess is that whether it replaces the next body style Panamera or not it will be in production in less than five years. The fact that Porsche would not introduce any vehicle that could not be tracked is very important. I very much like the design of the Mission E, although a production model will obviously be a bit less extreme. It is cool that the 911 styling cues have evolved so powerfully. Not concerned a bit about charging stations. Porsche has the resources to compete. My further guess is that the final version will have a much higher price than the Tesla P90D, which options out in the mid $130k range. So think $180-190k+ with a few of the inevitable Porsche options, but well above $200k OTD.

That it would be priced well above what I could afford new did cross my mind. At 600 HP it's competing with the 911 TTS, and they'll price it accordingly.
