971 Panamera Transmission Fault
Hi all,
My Sport Turismo now has 45k miles and recently got its 40k service done (yay!). However, I am now getting more and more fault errors for the transmission where it says the reverse gear is not available. The car will then not shift out of whatever gear it was in prior to the message. I've fixed it before by shutting the car off, opening the driver's door, and restarting the vehicle. Are there any other 971 owners who have been experiencing similar issues? If so, how did you go about diagnosing it with your dealer?
Thanks in advance!
Cheers,
DC

Same thing happens to me, 20K miles. When it happens about once a week, it’s always after the car has been sitting overnight, within 10:seconds of driving. Same solution as yours
Im bringing it in for service next week, I’ll see what they say

Ditto you both. This happened for the first time to me (in my '18 Turbo Sport Turismo) 4 days ago; exactly as you both described and resolved by simply restarting. I'm really curious what either of you find out. I figured I wouldn't pursue it until it happened again, but that is subject to change depending on this thread. Thanks for starting it!

I've experienced the same on my 2018 971 4S (50k miles on the clock).
It was the first time I saw the alert (mid-Aug), and a bit nerve-wracking for me, since I'm cruising along a highway and I wasn't able to shift gears (stuck at third gear I think).
I have to pull aside and restart the engine, didn't really know what to expect, and I was 200miles away from home!
Thankfully the rest of the drive home was fine.
That was before I realized a few others on this forum experienced the same. A few weeks the alert came up as I pulled the car out of the garage. I casually park the car aside, restart and message gone.
I reckon its to do with the system as a few had commented on various posts.

My first experience with the transmission fault was last Friday. Since my car is still under factory warranty I had Porsche come get it at the house. Dealer did a computer flash and no issues so far.
I plan on having the dealer involved every time I have this same issue. 2018 4S (35K on the clock). The code did clear prior to the dealer picking the car up. I have full warranty until March 2025.
Just wanted to be sure there was no serious issue. This car is so far advanced from my 88 911. On that car I can fix just about anything.

I have a 18 Turbo Sport Turismo too, and it came up this am going to work. Turned off car, open door, start it went away and would shift gears, calling dealership this am. reading around sounds like a "software issue"

Got my TT back today. They confirm found "Passive" fault P17AA00, Gear valve 1 stuck. they cleared fault and automictic programming and test drove 20 miles. no issue. sounds like the rest a programming thing

I was on the way to bring my vehicle in for the APA1 recall when I get the message. I had seen this about 10,000mi ago (about 16-or so months prior). I pulled over and restarted the car and had not seen the issue the rest of the way to the shop.
It seemed to have happened in a similar fasion last time:

It seemed to have happened in a similar fasion last time:
- Long distance trip the previous day.
- Car sits for a day or two.
- Car is driven, within 1 mile I received the Transmission Reverse Gear error.
- Error clears after restarting the vehicle.
- Note - I wish I had taken a picture the first time it happened so I can remember exactly when. I also did not have my PIWIS then so I could not scan and I did not bring it to the dealer immediately.

I'm not about to ask for a parts cannon approach, rather have it troubleshooted properly and addressed properly than just replacing everything but it may take longer/more trips to the dealer. It's hard to reproduce as the message/behavior goes away as soon as the car is restarted.

Dropped mine off this morning: previously, the error occurred two different time on the highway at passing speeds, and then this morning it popped up shortly after startup when driving down the street at ~15 mph.
I checked out the prior service records on the car (I'm second owner) and they indicated that the "P17AA00" error code has appeared before and the dealer reprogrammed the PDK unit to fix it. Clearly that didn't work, so will see what the dealership says now...
