Default Dilemma - 970.2 GTS or 971 4S

Hoping to get some advice from folks on here. I currently own a 2010 Panamera 4S with sport exhaust. Needless to say, that NA V8 is music to the ears. I've been in the market for a 970.2 GTS and finding quite a few that I like in my price range. I've driven a few and they sound identical to my 2010 4S.

I'm also finding used 971 4S models on the market for reasonable prices. I know they're quicker than the old 4S and I plan on test driving them but have any of the folks on here owned the old V8s and then gone to the turbo 6 cylinder motors? And how did you end up liking it? Will I endlessly miss the rumble and muffled backfires of the V8?

Thanks!

It's not apples to apples, but other than sometimes missing the low-end grunt, I had no issues switching from my Audi S6 4.0TT to the 971 4S 2.9TT. Both cars were equipped with the sports package and sports exhaust.

S6 has a nice sounding V8 - did you miss the sound?

The sports exhaust on the Panny is better/louder than the S6, so I don't really notice/miss the sound.

Do you get a lot of backfiring/cackling on the panny with downshifts? Thanks for all of this info btw.

Yes, with the sports exhaust turned on (especially in Sports or Sports+ mode). Definitely test drive one and make sure it has the sports exhaust and make sure to turn it on.

Agree with Amelen. I recently went from a 2013 Audi S7 (so v8 TT) to a 2018 Panamera s4 with sports exhaust. Sound, burbles, etc are much more noticeable with the Panny. Can’t comment on the prior NA V8 panny, but I’m very satisfied with the v6 TT and sports exhaust in the 2018 4s. I loved my s7, but the Panny is dramatically better from a handling/sports/feel standpoint.

Owned a 2015 970 GTS. SPECTACULAR sounding V8. Loved it.
Sold after about 15 mo.

Last Oct bought 971 4 (not the S). Great car. Nothing will ever sound like the V8 but this car has a nice growl and is better than expected. Gas mileage is amazing (30 mpg on highway). Exterior lines are prettier than 970 IMO.

Biggest gripe is transmission can be a bit jerky if caught between 1st and 2nd gears at low, creeping, speeds. Not a big deal and it’s not the first car we’ve owned that behaves that way.

Very comfortable, beautiful vehicle. But if you want the V8 sound you may not love the V6 version.

I've owned both in turbo form. I would take the 971 10 times out of 10. Just about everything to the touch has been improved especially the infotainment.

Not sure how helpful I will be here but here's my experience.

I had a 970.1 4S and I loved the car. Only reason I gave it up was becuase the CPO was coming to and end and I refused to drive a Panamera without warranty. I then moved on to a M6 Gram Coupe with a tune. That Car was putting out over 600 HP. However, the grip was terrible. I test drove the 971 4S and I was disappointed. The power was good on the low end but lacking on the top end. The car had no oomph to me when you stomped on the gas. The power delivery felt the same as it would if you leaned into the gas vs stomping on it. Immediately when I jumped into the Turbo that oomph was back. Hence the decision to grab a turbo.

For my tastes the Turbo was the car to get. The 971 is a better car overall but I wonder about the V6 engine. It's a screamer for sure. But it behaves differently than a V8 does.

You'll know if it's for you after a thorough test drive.
