Hate to break it to you guys, but it will likely be a forced induction engine in the Z06, probably a PD blower. Had this discussion over on CF. For GM to achieve their 150k-200k mile durability targets (along with their 100k powertrain warranty) AND achieve the horsepower targets, it will likely be FI.
That said, I believe it will be around 600hp 6.2 LT7 supercharged with extremely good cooling systems to keep coolant and oil in check much better than even the C6 ZR1. Instant torque and a massive powerband will make people quickly forget the NA engine.
I would like an 7,500-8,000rpm 575hp NA engine for the C7 Z06 as much as anybody, but I don't think it's realistic while achieving the durability targets GM has internally.
So, that leaves a 700hp twin turbo ZR1 as the top dog. I'm collecting cans for cash now.
There are durable turbocharged big block engines in Chevy and Ford trucks, but they seem to all be low rpm. Dragsters have big supercharged engines, but they aren't durable.
Then again, my wife has a 493 HP supercharged engine in her SL55. However, she drives like a little ole lady. Come to think of it, she is a little ole lady!
I think the LS9 engine is plenty durable, but the heat soak from a turbo or supercharged engine doesn't seem too appealing, especially for a track focused car.
That was one of the main reasons why I found the GT3/RS versions more appealing than either a GT2 or Turbo.
We shall see in about another month what GM has planned.
My buddy was at Bondurant yesterday they had them lined up. We are going down late winter to get his racing licensing done, I have mine, but want to go to try out the car. Pfadt has already engineered a blower for their c7 with trouble free driving in mind made 650 on a easy tune
