Raptor for a new daily
Hey guys. I know a lot of you have a Raptor as a DD and I’m planning on replacing my old RR in the next few weeks. Everyone I’ve spoken with seems to say 2017+ is a must.
Any help you you can share in regards to what options I should do or if I should go 17,18 or 19 would be great. Haven’t had much time to research and have never owned a F150 or even a domestic before.
thanks all.

I have an '18. '17's are the same. The major differences with the '19's are the live valve Fox shocks and Recaro seats. Bead lock-capable wheels also have a different design. I've had mine almost a year and has been doing DD duties and has been great. Averaging 14-15 mpg, which sounds horrible (and I suppose it is), but with the massive 40 gal tank, I only have to fill up once every 2-3 weeks. Comfortable ride and all the creature comforts you would need. Only option you 'need' is the 802A pkg. Everything else can be had in the aftermarket if you really wanted it.

‘17 - ‘19 are same truck except for the ‘19s live Fox suspension. You can also option a new Recaro seat which is not that much different than the standard seats imho.
They are great trucks. I look forward to driving mine every day.

Dot: I love my Raptor. Mine is an ‘18. I had a ‘13. Wouldn’t buy any other truck unless you are doing heavy towing ie 9000lbs +.

Edit.
thanks for the reply “bonehead”. I assume you say 802a is a must because of the 4.10 gearset? Has that been a $10k option for all three years? (17,18 and 19?) or was it standard at one point? Do most come equipped with that option? Not looking to spec this purchase. I would rather walk onto the lot and take it home same day.

I’m starting to look more and more at the Raptors. I really like that truck. Not sure I’ll pull the trigger or not. Towing for me is infrequent but will be a bit more challenging with the fox suspension on the raptor ( towing 7000-8000 lbs).
Must have options 802A, regular seats, carbon fiber accents, no decals, bead lock rims, no sunroof, heated rear seats. I would also look into deactivating the start stop function. There are several good options to do that.
There’s a legitimate chance that if I do buy one my wife will d*ck punch me as well, so I better be wearing a cup if and when I bring one home.

The 17s and 18s are in fact not the same. There is one very important key difference besides the different keys, sound system, and a few others: The turbos on the 18s and newer are slightly bigger, and have ported inlets. There are issues with turbo overspin and shaft failure on the 17s....and this was Ford's fix. I've held the two different turbos in my hands.
I've had my 18 for nearly 2 years. Awesome truck. I'm averaging about 15 mpg. Who cares. It rides incredibly well and is fun to drive, for what it is anyway. Zero negatives other than fuel economy, which shouldn't be a surprise for anybody looking at one of these.

I DD a 17 avalanche grey. It's the best daily I've ever had. I'd probably recommend just buying a 19 since they don't depreciate as much as they probably should, in addition to all the previously stated improvements.

I ordered a 2019 Raptor after test driving a 2018. Mine was the first customer delivered 2019 in Las Vegas. I love the live shocks. I especially notice the difference in the corners.
You'll get divided opinions on the sunroof. I optioned it and love it. It’s massive and really opens up the truck.
As a DD, you can’t go wrong!

I have a '17. It's the best truck I've ever had. It's my DD in the winter. I do miss having a V8, the sound of the ecoboost sucks and I resent the sounds piped through the speakers to compensate. Looking forward to the 3rd gen, maybe a Ram TRX, we'll see.

yes now that it’s between 18 and 19 the 2019 sounds like the best call. Looks like I need to find a new 4 door with 802a that’s aging on the lot this week.

I’ve had an ‘18 and now a ‘19. I drive the 18 for a year and 19k miles. Sold it for 6k less than I paid for it. Rinse and repeat.
The 19 is a better truck. The live valve shocks totally improve handling and ride. Also in 19 they added the electric parking brake. A small thing but a very nice touch and the foot stomper version in the old truck annoyed me and sometimes (often) wouldn’t catch. The B&O in the 18/19 is far superior to the Sony system in the 17.
802A and raptor technology package are the musts. 802A adds a bunch of luxury features. The tech package adds all the active safety stuff and adaptive cruise.

I have had my 18 for a year now. Great truck. I added a Cobb tune and intake to the truck a month. Love it and totally worth it. Feels like a different truck.

So I recently sold my 18 Raptor, I really liked that truck and have some incredible memories in it.
For me, from an off roading pov it was very much what a Porsche GT car is on the track, namely something that is focused for a specific task but that is also very competent on public roads and daily driving.
Most of its life my Raptor lived in AZ where it was stored for when I went out there to off road. At some point I brought home back east to see if I would enjoy it as a dd and I decided that for that role it was a poor choice for me.
I'm a little bit older (51) so the miles I drive become more significant as I age as the ones before me are decreasing by the day, so I wanted something that was actually fast, fun, and visceral to drive on the way to daily banalities. The way I saw it a Porsche or other competent sports car is about the drive and the destination is secondary, with the Raptor the daily drive is completely uneventful (albeit very comfortable) but it the destination is extraordinary as it can take you to places few other vehicles can. For example:
Anyway, I sold it and bought an M5 Comp which is something much more exciting to drive on a daily basis but slightly more practical than a 911.
But if you like the way the Raptor looks there's very little that I can say that is negative about it. Just make sure you can live with its size as it drives much bigger than a regular F150, and I would take the 19 over the 18, and pass on the 17.
I'm not gonna lie tho, sometimes I do miss it.
I did buy a little 19 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk to have as a utility vehicle if I need to schlep stuff and I'm using it as we speak out in Sedona ... it's not a Raptor but it is quite impressive how well it handles off-roading, and it's much smaller so I've been able to drive many trails that I wasn't able to experience with the Raptor. And Nardo was free.
