Carplay as a replacement for PCM Nav

I have a 2017 macan GTS on order and after testing out PCM Nav at the dealership vs carplay apple maps, I can't justify shelling out the extra $1730 for nav and $1300 for connect vs just the $830 for connect regular. Hopefully waze gets implemented in the future. What do you all think? Am I crazy?

Nope. I think Connect with no navigation is the best option for a lot of people. The biggest downside is that phone technology changes much more frequently. You might switch out of an iPhone, Apple could stop supporting CarPlay, etc. The upside is that they could improve the functionality over time.

What about resale value, if that's a factor for you at all? Do you think future buyers expect to have navigation in a vehicle at that price level? Just curious about people's thoughts on this.

From a resale value perspective, you probably get more if you include Nav, but you won't get back enough to cover the initial cost of Nav. It will depreciate as quickly and probably more quickly than the vehicle itself. With more and more smartphones being sold, built in nav will be less desirable to unwanted (in my opinion). Just one more thing that goes out of date quickly and can break/fail and need repair.

To decide, just ask yourself if you really want to always need to physically connect the phone to a cable when you want to use navigation, and mount/dismount your phone. I don't, so I got nav.

I physically plug my phone so it's already charged, so that hasn't been an issue for me. From what I've read, the traffic data with the Nav isn't great and the routes it picks isn't great either.

We have a 17 with the new PCM, and the nav/traffic has been fine, no issues. The 17 PCM is nothing like the 16's and earlier models.

Yes, it's now a capacitive screen. More iPad like. The whole system is now based on the PCM4, rather then the PCM3 like the `16's and earlier. I really like the new system when compared to the PCM3.

If you haven't tried Apple CarPlay do yourself a favor and check it out. It works like it should as if your iPhone is mounted to your dash, Siri is spot on and the interface is extremely fast. Apple CarPlay isn't going anywhere, don't waste your money on Nav when it takes forever to search for points of interest.

^ditto.
Car play Maps is as good as any car Nav system. It also includes phone contacts, messages, music, podcasts, pandora, spotify....
Or you can disconnect your phone and use Waze and still have phone contacts and music/podcasts etc from your phone over Bluetooth.
I definitely don't see the point in paying $3k plus monthly fees for built in nav.

Personally, I felt that the navigation was horrible on my '14 Cayman. Not the interface, but the actual directions given. It would always take me some of the worst routes (and I had verified all the different avoidances that were set).
So when it came time to order the Macan, I passed on the Nav and got Connect. The phone will always have newer maps and technology than the car, which is why I think you're seeing more manufacturers shift to CarPlay and Android Auto.
