Reason I ask is that while I really want a 911 to complement my A8, I have limited space - 2 car garage; no easy way to install a lift; and a tight driveway - so jockeying cars will be required frequently. Wife's car is a Q7. I've been thinking that the 911 would be perfect to add some excitement to the drive and mitigate the boredom of the A8 - which I don't necessarily dislike and has very low mileage. But logistics has me thinking a 3rd car isn't practical and maybe the Macan is a good solution. Anyway curious if anyone has made the transition. Appreciate your thoughts.

Need the Macan for road trips with Wife. The TT for occasional canyon carving road trips with buds.

Wife can keep the '07 CLK 550 that she has loved for 13 years since new. Or the Macan.

I went from a 997.2 C4S manual to a Macan because doing so made me money that I needed to pay for my dog's cancer treatment. After my dog died almost a year later I couldn't get back into a 911 quick enough and got into a 997.2 GTS manual (actually got it on the same day I put my dog down). Nothing wrong with a Macan, it's an amazing vehicle. But it's not a 911..... I think of the Macan as a hot hatch on stilts. If you're going to go this route then I'd suggest a Macan GTS for the sportiest experience.

Macan is great for an SUV but it doesn't really compare that much to a 991.2

I had a '16 Turbo Cab, replacing with a '21 Turbo S Cab .. my DD is a '18 Macan TPP ... I agree with others 911 <> Macan

We have 992 Targa 4S (sold a 991.2 Turbo S to pay for it...), Panamera Turbo, and Macan S. The Macan is a fantastic SUV, but cannot come close to substituting for a 911. If you're looking for something to go with the A8, unless you desperately need a SUV, go for the 911. With my three, if I had to get rid of one of them it would be the Panamera (even though it's a fabulous car). Macan is more versatile, and nothing can substitute for the 911.

If space is an issue, pick the 2 you like most or change things up to get 2 you like. Sell the Q7 and buy a Cayenne Turbo or another fun SUV (Cayenne S or GTS, Macan Turbo, SQ7). Sell the A8 and buy a 911 of a practical modern comfortable daily driver vintage. Then you have a fun family car and a fun personal car.

911 and Macan owner here. The Macan is the best non-exotically priced performance SUV out there (that actually runs, sorry Stelvio) but if you want a fun car, it won’t compare to a 911. Why do you want a Macan when you already have a Q7 in the household?

Thanks for the comments. The Q7 isn't the issue. That's our family long hauler and wife's daily driver and we just got it a year ago. My "issue" is that I've been itching to dump the A8 after 5.5 years and only 44,000 miles. But because there is still value to me in the A8 and I won't get anything for it in trade I thought instead of getting a replacement to add and get the 911. So I've been looking at 997.1 and 997.2 for the last few weeks. But this space issue has me rethinking. There's also a part of me that says dump the A8 and get a 991.1 and try to daily drive it. Might be tough with 2 kids and New England winters. But not impossible I suppose. Big change going to a 911 (or a Macan for that matter) from a big sedan though. First world problems for sure!

Maybe a more entertaining sedan would work. Middle of next year the new M3 will be available in AWD. Used current model E63 AMG might occasionally come to market soon. Same goes for the current M5. Used Audi RS7? Used Panamerica Turbo?

Personally, I would give up on the A8 and sell it even if you suffer more depreciation than you want for the miles you have driven it. If you can afford to, buy a car you really enjoy. I also think practicality is important since shuffling cars to access the one you want to drive becomes enough of a hassle over time that you often just take the readily available car instead. Having a dual purpose car makes sense for you over having 2 cars.

I have one car on top of a 4 post lift. Whichever car is up there tends to get driven less than I might like. And I tend to leave the car that is in the garage bay that is blocked by my wife’s car and instead take whatever car is in the unblocked bay.

if it’s just a weekend toy and you will go through the effort of shuffling cars around or parking one on the street for the weekend, then the analysis might be different.

If I already had one SUV, I would not buy another SUV.

Get a 997.2 or 991 and daily drive it. The 991 has gotten to the size where it's a perfectly comfy GT size car and not as small and sorry feeling as the 997, so a decent compromise between a 997 and Macan if that's what you're after.

As someone who owns both a 991.1 for myself and Macan S for the wife I can say that while the Macan is a great, sporty, small luxury SUV it's not terribly exciting. In my opinion the Macan is absolutely no replacement for a proper sports car despite whatever Porsches marketing may suggest.

If you are looking to spice up your daily drive go for a 991 with zero regrets. It seems like you already have the wife's Q7 for the people hauler/ road trip / utility aspects. Also, a set of proper winter wheels will make driving even a rear wheel drive 991 a non issue providing you can stomach the salt / sand and general wear of New England winters. I personally can not, so I utilize a "beater" car for most of the winter but if I were limited to having only 2 cars I would simply suck it up and drive the 991 all year round. It's simply the most prefect daily driver sports car and everyday that you don't have one is just another day you are missing out on the fun so hurry up and join us soon!

I'll echo that a Macan is usually a good complement to a 911 rather than a straight replacement. However, a GTS spec Macan is not without its charms and can be fun in its own right. It's definitely more dynamic than a Q7 or an A8. If you go to the test drive step, see if you can do a bit more than go around the block with a little bit of acceleration - this is one of those cars that feels pretty subdued when driven normally, but if you really attack a curvy road, you're going to be surprised how much grip and balance there is. If you are planning to do DE, autocross or seriously pushing cars on canyon road blasts, OR If the prestige of the 911 is your thing, a Macan probably won't do it for you though.

I have literally lit the brakes on fire on the track in the Macan (for real...flames)...I thought it would be hilarious to smoke some guy in his GT3 with my Macan...OK...well I couldn't overtake him but trust me he was royally pissed how close to his bumper I stayed in an SUV
