I’m always fascinated by people who buy a Porsche of any model and then obsess over the cost of an oil change. If you like doing the work good for you and do it because you like it. If you are 80 as I am and no longer want to do it yourself take it to a good Indy or the dealer and quit worrying about the cost.

 

Does the drain plug have a compression washer that must be replaced new at each oil change?

Fascinated? That's an unusual statement. For me? The reason I can afford my toys is being smart with my money. If it's a simple fix or simple oil change that I can do on my own? Yep, I will and save 75% of what the dealer charges. I'm not even close to 80 by a long shot, but my guess is that I will still be "worrying about the cost" of all routine maintenance.

 

At 42, I'm fascinated by people who are okay with throwing money away. Maybe when I'm 80, I'll have enough financial security to no longer worry about the cost of anything too. Can't take it with you, right?

 

I'm 80 and I still do all my own maintenance on our seven vehicles. That includes changing over the 21 inch turbo wheels and tires to the 19 inch winter set and performing mods on my track car. Oh, yes...I'm still instructing at 4 or 5 HPDE's each year. Remember that old addage: "It's harder to hit a moving target...Keep moving!"

First thing I did was make an access panel so I no longer have to take that flimsy little bit of fiberboard they dare call a "skid plate" off. For those who've never seen an actual skid plate, PM me and I"ll send you some pics of my stainless steel one on my Touareg. I prefer dropping a mile or 2 per gallon in consumption than leave my transfer case or other on the rocks. Here is a link to that mod:

Since it's now an Audi engine, the oil filter is on top. Remove engine cover and filter should be in the back easily accessible with a socket. Yes, you need to replace the compression washer. I don't. I installed a Fumoto valve on all my cars and I no longer bother with the oil pan plug. Open the valve and the oil drains out.

The compression washers are the same across vehicles. The same work on my V8 Touareg, Audi RS5 and Macan. You can buy them on eBay by the hundreds. I believe the torque setting is 18ft.lbs

Since Porsche recommends Mobil1 0-40w (even my skid steer Olga runs on it) Walmart is your best bet. Get the 5 qt. containers you'll save a bundle over the single quart.

Above all. Whether you use ramps or easy jack or whatever, make sure you have chocks for those not using lifts and anytime you get under the vehicle, jack stands are a must.

I'm 70 and the day I don't find it fun, I'll call an Uber and won't spend near 100k on a car. Once the car is off warranty I only want to have one person to blame; me.

But what you can leave to your heirs, which in my advanced age is a big consideration. Gotta have some fun, without going all out and wasting money.

 

I have no kids so what's left is all going to charities and nieces/nephews but I was being sarcastic.

I read thru all of the posts here and many differing opinoins ...

1. Not a single person would fault you for taking it to your dealership.
2. If cost is an issue, an independent shop could do the oil change in a little bit of time and probably less cost to you.
3. If you are handy, you could do it yourself. (that is what I do with my 996TT)

Personally, I would never take my P cars to "jiffy lube" or anything like that.

Absolutely. When you buy a vehicle, you have to calculate the TCO (total cost of ownership) as part of the process. It's senseless to whine after the fact about what one should research beforehand about maintenance, insurance, and other costs.
