Default 2020 Porsche Macan Turbo - Reviews

Matt Farah believes that the Macan Turbo is the best of the crossovers and has many other positive things to say about all of the Macan iterations -- and he saved a squirrel in the process:

Nice reviews. We just picked up our Miami blue similarly optioned except we got the red interior and 21” Spyder wheels. Put 800 miles on the car and here are some additional insights vs the 2015 version we had. Low end torque is definitely down vs the original as expected. Would be great to see a Dyno chart to see the difference but you can definitely feel it. Up top it does feel more free reving vs older one where it felt like it was running out of breadth. Also sound on old engine was throated. New one sounds more smooth and also now has the artificially created burble sound when you let off the gas. Hard to say which engine we prefer without more seat time. The suspension does feel firmer on all settings. Might be due to wheels as we had 20” previously but it still feels a lot tighter. Luv the smaller steering wheel and the control for the sport settings. Also the new screen does take some getting used to but has so many options to use especially with CarPlay. The surround view camera are great but not sure how much use they will get. The brakes do feel alot better than the old ones. They actually stop like you would expect now vs the old ones where you needed to get on them a bit earlier. Pccb should last the life of the car which is great as we needed to change our old brakes at about 40k miles.

couple of things I am not sure about. The 12v outlet in the glovebox and rear console with usb-c ports. Not sure I like this as now you can’t power other types of accessories unless you use the front console outlet.

the rear hatch opens with a loud plastic sound because they now have a plastic flap that springs up where the metal latch is. The old design was fine so not sure why they made this change.

luv the rear valence on the hatch. Painted and also has some inlet designs on it.

still drives just as nice but firmer. Will report back on more if I find anything else significantly different.

thank you so much for your write up. Honestly this is the best review I’ve seen of any review for me, and I’ve read them all, because no one seems to want to talk about the differences between the old turbo and the new turbo. A lot of us have the old turbo and wanna know should we be in line for the new one? Really appreciate your thoughts. Any other comparisons or thoughts you can think of are really appreciated on this end.

Thanks. I too have read most review and no one seems to do the comparison or wants to comment on changes that are no necessarily better.

another note. The braking with the pccb is much better than the steels. Not sure how the stock turbo brakes would be but have heard there were some early issues in the cayennes with them so I decided for less than 5k. Never have to do brakes again was a great choice. One disappointment is that for this price you would hope you would get multi piston calipers on the rear but it is still single piston ones.

New rear hatch design holds tons of water but of course not a deal breaker.

the 18 way seats feel even tighter than before. Might be because they are fresh but adjustment on bolsters don’t seem to go out as they previously did.

Now I need to drive more but even with the standard sports exhaust the car does not seem as loud. On the original turbo. Cold start was loud. Louder than our gt3 when it was stock. Now it seems much quieter. Down shifts are definitely not as loud when it does the rev match.

I’m curious as to your thoughts on the ride quality with the 21” wheels. Did you option air suspension?

Yes we have air suspension, the overall ride is stiffer than our 2015 with air suspension and 20" spyders.
One day will try on our 20" bbs CH-R to see if the ride quality feels the same.

Very interesting.
I have a MY 2017 Turbo and I just ordered the new Turbo 2020.
In your opinion, therefore, is the old 3.6-liter better than the new 2.9-liter?

Not sure yet as only have 800 miles on the car. I would say early impressions are that I do miss a bit of that low end grunt and sound.

Look forward to hearing your thoughts/comparison as well when you get your new Turbo.

PCCB should last way longer than that, at least longer than we will own this car. So we save on a brake maintenance.

Interesting. I guess ride quality is subjective and I don't know how soft/stiff a 2015 was but, I test drove a 2020 GTS with 20" and revised 10% stiffer from Macan S and I thought the ride was fantastic. It had a hint of "float" in the comfort mode and was firm and controlled in the sport and sport + modes but never harsh. I like the 21" wheels better, but as a daily driver, I guess I have to give them up if it will stiffen the ride noticeably. If I can find a turbo with 21" wheels, I'll give it a try.

This throttle house review does not get me excited at all to trade in my 2018 turbo.
