The 2.9 is unexpected, and if I'm not mistaken a new trend for GTS models.
I just picked up my 2020 the week of Thanksgiving, and I absolutely love it (it's for the wife but I drive it about as much as she does). I spec'd it very similarly to how a GTS would be spec'd; Carrara White with black contrast everywhere, the essential sports options, etc; came out to about $83k msrp. I considered waiting until the GTS because I've always thought they were actually pretty decent value; I have a 981 Boxster GTS as well... but it came down to 2 things (3 if you consider basic impatience):
- the Macan GTS models have not been as aesthetically different from the other Porsche GTS models, even including the Cayenne. My Boxster for example, I definitely HAD to have the GTS because the package includes a completely different front fascia, it's just more visually striking than the base or S model. The Macans basically just have the wheels and a few subtleties.
- my wife insists she MUST have ventilated seats, which isn't available with the alcantara GTS interior package. I absolutely love my Boxster's interior; I had never had alcantara seats or steering wheel before and I instantly fell in love with it. My wife loves it too but not as much as she loves having ventilated seats.
These two factors made me comfortable in the decision to not wait for the GTS- but now that it has a detuned engine from the Turbo I'm wondering if the experience will be dramatic enough to justify it.
I don't think it's possible to get me to consider taking a huge loss on trading it in but it would have been nice to know this a few months ago.
It makes sense that Porsche used the 2.9 from the turbo, because it's a twin turbo, compared to the S. The smaller turbo's will help limit turbo lag and provide better throttle response.

All Porsche GTS models (including your GTS Boxster) Simply have the Sport Design Package for the front and rear bumpers. Only difference is the Sport Design package for non-GTS vehicles are painted. Nothing new. IMHO I prefer the Standard front bumper for the latest Macan.

Understood. I guess I should have stated that the sportdesign package is more visually appealing for the Boxster than it is for the Macan. Also, when is the last time you saw a sportdesign package spec'd on a non-GTS anything? Just doesn't seem like very good value at all unless it comes with the GTS package.
The new GTS with the 2.9 engine is a nice bargain and surprise compared with the turbo. I was using the configurator and the difference with my options comes to around $10,000. When you look at the performance specs, we are splitting hair here, like in the .X seconds. Also, the GTS seems to get its maximum torque a couple of RPM's lower. Does that makes me desire to spend $10,000 more for the turbo? Most likely not

I wouldn't be surprised to see a tune that puts the turbo power in the GTS

Just speced one out and it came to 96K!!!! Of course I had to have deviated stitching and the surface coated brakes...
My wife wondered about the Taycan when we're ready to replace the '17 GTS... even the "base" model with some added extras will be pretty pricey though, and I'm not sold on electric yet. Would prefer the Taycan if it was a hatch not a trunk. Time will tell.
these small sporty suvs are the new hot hatches. no one really interested in civic si and golf gti any more. its macan gts vs amg vs bmw m small suvs. not sure that's a bad thing either despite extra weight and height. I prefer awd to fwd anyway
