I'm considering selling my 2014 E63 wagon for something a little less "crazy" since the wife will be using it as well and my car is close to coming off warranty. I'm considering the Macan GTS but have some concerns about the size, or more specific, the angle of the hatch, and my dog.
I have a 52lbs Labradoodle that comes with me all the time and I'd like him to be comfortable in the trunk area (not the back seats) of the vehicle. While the trunk is quite big, when the tailgate is closed, a lot of vertical space is limited due to the angle of the hatch. He's tall of leg (the pooch) and never really lies down when in the car...always sits.
There must be some dog people here who can share experience. I'm planning on taking the dog to the dealer to get him to jump in and see what it's like but if it's a no go from the start, then I'll look elsewhere.
I had a 60 lb Dobie-black lab who was quite fit. No way I would have wanted him in the area behind the seats due to, as your correctly surmise, the angle of the glass/hatch. Cayenne would be a better match.
Our 55lb Woodle (Wheaton Terrier) gets the back seat but I think she would be OK in the trunk with the cover removed. Porsche Prestige, where we got our GTS, is a very dog friendly dealership so I'm sure they can oblige you. BTW the hatch opening switch is on the rear wiper.
I don't even put my two corgis in my hatch area. They go in the back seat on a dog hammock. I used to put one in my GTI hatch because of the squared off top. You could probably make it work with the back seats down and the cargo management system rear separator net though.
Hello OP. I am actually thinking of going the other direction (macan gts to e63 estate) Anyway we had 2 standard poodles on and off when the parents would travel. Everything was fine.
Thanks for the advice guys. It seems it may be a little small..I'll bring him to the dealer and see how he fits. Otherwise perhaps a Cayenne...
richardbf, the E62 wagon is amazing. I assume you are looking at the latest version? The only gripe I have about mine is the transmission...it sort of sucks around town. Oh, and gas mileage...but that's expected with 577hp. Lol.
Get a 957 generation Cayenne with PDCC and air suspension, preferably a GTS, Turbo, or Turbo S. The 957 was the generation before they changed the rear hatch to be more angled and rounder (happened with the 958 in 2011). You'll have plenty of room for pup back there.
I have 2 chocolate labs. Both around 60 pounds. They both fit in back fine. One always lays down and the other always sits in middle and watches where we are going.
So I went to the dealer with my pooch (Hoosier) and he jumped right in and seemed to be fine. As mentioned above, with the centre seat folded down, he can poke his head through and see forward and seemed to be quite content. Now to find the right truck at the right price.
The cargo management system is a great option to have for partitioning off cargo in the back as well as the cargo net that comes with it. We'll use the net primarily to keep our long legged, 55 lb, Brittany out of the front seats. If you're looking for a full liner for the back, I would highly recommend Canvasback. Fit and finish is perfect, and, they are a small business out of MN which I like supporting.
