^ maybe you should pre order warranty gearbox.
the failure has nothign to do wiht what tire you use.
i have 50/50 failure rate for the 6 cars here. 50 on mpsc or dunlop 50 on RE71/R7
and really RE71 is no grippier than mpsc or dunlop so no more forced generated.

No third gear several times during a most recent event at Sonoma (Sears) coming out of T11 (90 degree right-hander) onto the front straight. Varied from finally getting into 3rd after few attempts to loosing 3rd completely (like it's in neutral). 3rd came back after slowing down and shifting into 4th and then back into 3rd. Drive home was fine but have not driven the car since. OEM Cups, no mods not even an alignment. Still waiting to wear out the fronts, lol. 4 track days since driving it in Europe last year.. 2015 build.
I'm sure my 3rd will eventually fail completely and was wondering if I have to wait for that total failure or take her in to the dealer now?

That sucks John :-(. It happened a couple of times earlier in the summer, again at Sears T11 but suprisingly not at Laguna T11 and I didn't think too much about it. My 997 GT3 has had a few problems getting into 3rd over the years (at Laguna T11, lol) and I knew -and others confirmed it- that it was simply too much side load on the tranny coming out of the turn etc. 20k miles on that GT3, same clutch and no other issues and so I thought the GT4's issues were similar UNTIL 3rd "felt like" neutral during the turn at Sears and I knew this was a different kind of problem.
I'll keep this board posted on how things go. July 2015 build, 6000 miles.

JAM2 indicated new failure. That's the one I'm interested in and what part of the track?

Given what a PITA it is to get a gearbox from Porsche would it make sense to people for me to make some stock 3rds? My thinking is that we don't know if the replacement boxes even fix the problem and some people would rather just know it is done right and get on with it. Thoughts?

Ask Preuninger whether he'll consider outsourcing (some of) the gearbox fixes to you and warrant the work as factory-in-kind. That would work for everyone ;-)

I don't think most gt4 drivers will pay up until they are out of warranty. I'll guess most of them haven't had a 5k service on a Porsche before. If you can make and sit on them....

I must have missed it - what is the solution? Is this something Bill could work with parts from you?

To be honest if I did 3rd I'd buy 4th and 5th to go with it. Not a lot in additional labor.

The offer to make a stock third available is generous. In a sane world PAG would source them from you and rebuild the box. Sounds crazy to supply new boxes for one gear. Not to mention a customer isn't waiting a month to get a box that may break again.

Sounds like a great idea. If the gear was available within the next few weeks I'd try and talk Porsche into opening up the trans to replace it when they put the new one in.

How challenging is it to replace 3rd? That is, does the shop need to have expertise with this particular trans or just general transmission service knowledge?

No Pet of any of the internals. You would be on your own with part identification , availability etc I would think. It's your profession. Porsche dealing with it apparently internally. No service bulletin. Regionals' unaware until a failure in their district it seems.
