The half-inch or so increase in overall size also seems fairly significant to me given this car's already low ride height from the factory.
+1

With a stiff sidewall, you do *not* want to pinch the tire with a marginal/too narrow wheel. I've seen tests where a narrower 71R on an ideal wheel stuck better than a wider 71R on the same wheel, within spec but at the far narrow end.

According to my calculations, the OEM tires have the following section heights (see http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete...jsp?techid=7):

front: 85.75mm
rear: 88.5mm

The tire sizes I indicated would have the following section heights:

front: 102mm
rear: 99.75mm

The difference between the OEM and the tires indicated is 0.44" in the front and 0.64" in the rear. This difference seems pretty minor to me.

Any thoughts?
will it work?

I don't think taller and wider will work in the front, but I could be wrong. I wouldn't want even taller gearing in the rear.

I had too much trouble with 19's fitting, spacers and staying legal in SCCA autocross. So....

I just ordered 20" RE-71R's (285/35R20 & 255/40R20) from tirerack (Tanner). He said it would fit with no rubbing.

I'll report how they do...

Yes it does. In a pinch one weekend I had to use them at the track. They have worked well for me with no issues. The only time that I heard rubbing was driving on the freeway over some dips. A Porsche tech actually should me a Manuel which approved Porsche installing them.

I'm going to see how the car handles with the 265/285 set-up...305s might bring back some understeer.

Please report back, I'm very interested! I'm not too keen on getting yet another pair of wheels, worry about storage etc.

Did you have them mounted yet? Is there any rubbing?

Bad news is tirerack guy made a mistake--> 20" RE-71R's (285/35R20 & 255/40R20) . The fronts will rub in the front fender. The rears may be ok, but i dont' want to take the risk.

So, the Good news is --> they are sending 20" RE-71R (295/30R20 & 245/35R20) . These are the exact size of the OEM, so I believe it has to work now!!

anyway, sorry for the mistake --- but should be good soon enough... either way i'll confirm the 20's when they arrive..

Are the 255s rubbing in the front?

The sizes he sent you are the only sizes available for RE-71R 20" wheels at this time: 255/40R20 and 285/35R20 (see the sizes at Tirerack).

The stock tires are 295/30R20 and 245/35R20, but they're not available for RE-71R. Are you saying Tirerack has these in stock now? They don't seem to appear on their web site yet.

I'm interested in your findings also. I'm only recommending 245 up front unless someone finds out the 255 has clearance. I know things are tight up front.

The 245's have come into stock. Anyone who has them pre-ordered with me should have allocation. The 295's are still inbound into the US, and we are likely to see them late September.

Damon - I assume for those that pre-ordered a set of tires, you are holding the fronts until the rears come in to stock... to ship all 4 at once?

Correct. Anyone who has both pairs on order with me has a pair lined up with their name on them until the rears come in - then I'll ship all four at once.
