Its confirmed its the fan.

Now the question is what was it about the fan?
Bearing? Housing? Wire? Rubble? German Mouse?

Just got the car back.
OK, so it was a small stone in the fan assembly. We got a theme going on here?
It sure sounded a lot worse than that.

Interesting that the fans kept going. On my 997 when an object got lodged in a radiator fan the fan cut out and I just lost some cooling. Was the fan damaged?

There's one part I didn't understand based on an earlier post. I'm assuming this is a radiator fan? If so, why would it sound louder from the side intakes? Was it noticeably louder from that location?

Its the engine bay thermo controlled cooling fan which only comes on when its hot in the engine bay.

You know those side intakes. Its split so half of that goes to the intake track and the other half is diverted into the engine bay.

Thanks. I could see the intake split both in the intakes themselves and in some of the earlier schematics but never knew where the 'other half' went.

I'm guessing this will happen occasionally to people as - between the front wheels being pushed out and the side intakes seeming to work like catcher's mitts - stone collection seems very common. I've taken to carrying a can of compressed air just to blow them out after every drive.

Engine problem=failed operation/seized engine/rod through the side of the block.
Engine problem noise related=rod knock/bearings/lifters
Engine problem=misfires/timing issues/scored cylinders/scored camshafts/stuck valves

Etc.

You have a noisy fan. And the title says " Engine problem ". Thank God you're not a technician!

Very sticky tires=pick up every debris on the road and throwing it God knows where...

Glad it's been resolved!

There's a workaround for that. Take it up to 50mph and ram it in first

Seriously, I wish somebody made tiny, unobtrusive front wheel guards for the GT4. I'm thinking something like a Lexan strip that adheres to the inside of the wheel arch and only sticks out where the rockers start to curve in under the car 1/2 inch protrusion max. It wouldn't stop everything but I'd bet it would reduce the volume of rocks substantially. Maybe I'll see where I can buy Lexan...

As with the other false alarm thread, the original post should be edited.

I agree.

And if I may say,I have been plenty critical of Porsche. Those that have read my posts are aware. I have tried to keep the Kool-Aid drinking at a minimum.
So,even though I might sound defensive about the car since I'm getting it,I am aware that it can actually develop real problems in the future. But until then,I just hope nobody will jump to conclusions without having all the facts. I believe someone that is interested in this car and has a chance of getting it, might actually come on here to read what the owners are saying without actually posting or putting the time to read entire threads. And the first thing they see is the title : Engine problem...and perhaps read the original post.
In Mark's case,he genuinely thought he had a serious engine problem. And I thought so too, after reading his initial post. But he took the time and updated it accordingly, which is appreciated. Not so much in this case : as a matter of fact, the OP even stated in his initial post that he " knows " what the problem is and he engaged everyone in a guessing game.

Just my 2c FWIW...
