Default consider selling my gt3 for gt4

Hi there... been driving the new GT3 for 7500 miles...and the manual bug kicks in again...I wonder if you happen to have driven both gt3 and gt4, do you think the long gear ratio should something be of concern in daily driving (not track because I don't track) and are both handlings similar? My last manual was Audi TT-RS (still miss it too, should have kept it!)

Should I sell my gt3 to get the gt4? Thanks.

Unfortunately I can't answer your question from direct personal experience as my gt4 hasn't shown up yet. From everything I have read and heard the fatter and flatter torque band of the GT4 in the lighter package makes up for a lot of the horsepower delta between it and the GT3. I think for everyday driving the power difference won't be noticeable at all or possibly even slightly going to the GT4's favor for the reason stated above. At the end of the day though when you really want to stretch the cars legs the GT3 will definitely feel more powerful and more special. If you are looking for a more direct experience and don't care about the status or all out track time of your car the GT4 might end up working better for you. That is of course if you can get one. You might also feel more comfortable throwing around the GT4 since it has that crazy turn in capability that the 911's just don't have. If you want something to master though the GT3 can't be beat as once you get closer to the cars capabilities it rewards you like no other. If you can swing both I would say go for it. I think these two cars would work great together especially now that the GT3 is an auto and they are both so different. One last question you have to ask yourself is can you live without that rush to 9,000rpm that you currently have.

Shifting at 9000 with manual = titillating, visceral, provocative, bristling
Shifting at 9000 with PDK = Gran Turismo 5

OMG, that's how I felt.. In all honesty, I just could not feel the extremes of the gt3 in law-abiding highways...and since I don't track...

Well why don't you start tracking? It should go a long way to making your car feel more special and rewarding, not to mention allowing you to experience far more of its potential. You could always start by going as a spectator and just catching rides with instructors to dip your toe in the water. If it's a fear of loss thing, there are companies that offer HPDE insurance. If even that isn't enough for you, spend $15K on a modded Miata. You'll still have a blast and be challenged, not to mention having vastly lower running costs than just about anything else.

The transmission issue is a big one. PDK-S is great but I do think many 1GT3 owners miss a lot of what comes along with shifting gears. Part of what attracted me to the GT4 was not just that it is a manual, but it is *only* manual... and not a PDK-rigged "7-speed" (misnomer) manual either. If you are finding your GT3 boring because of the auto tranny, a GT4 may be better for you. You wouldn't be the first to make the switch if you do.

How often are you able to hit 9000 rpm in your Gt3 now? How often are you sitting in traffic? How often do you use the front axle lift?

As for those who say the gt4 and gt3 make good complementary cars, I don't get it. Unless you are a die hard Porsche fan, there are just too many cool cars out there to have both of these cars IMO. SImilar interiors, looks, and feel.

Get a GT4 and keep the GT3, that's what I'm doing.

I could have easily made the same mistake as you did except for the intervention of providence. A couple of years ago I took my 997S in for servicing and was given a 991 with PDK as a loaner. It's about a 45 minute drive from my house to the dealer. For the 1st 15 minutes PDK blew me away, but after 15 minutes it was just OK and on the final 15 minutes I was bored.

Selling your GT3 to get a GT4 may be a moot point however, since as far as I know it's impossible to buy a GT4 unless you are willing to pay someone a ridiculous markup.

I have no hard data to support this, but I would wager that there are more accidents on public roads than on the track per car mile driven, for the simple reason that when you're at the track, traffic only runs one way, there are no pedestrians, corner workers warn you of what's coming ahead, passing is (typically) only with a point-by, and most importantly, everyone out there is focused on actually driving rather than balancing a cell phone and a latte. For the most part, the track is as safe as you want to make it. Sure there are exceptions where external factors like people dripping oil around the track can affect your own safety regardless of your caution, but for the most part, if you drive in such a way to push your comfort zone a bit in the interest of improving your skills but stop short of being determined to extract every last ounce of what you're able to get out of your car, you'll be just fine. That's what I do.

Went from a. 2 GT3 to my 991 GT3. Have a GT4 scheduled for delivery next month and I'm not taking it. I've driven a lot of manuals in the past and I much prefer the PDK-S. If you think you want a GT4 see if you can get one. Probably easy to unload if you don't like it.
