The 9A1 3.8L engine came out in calendar year 2008 (model year 2009) with the 997.2 Carrera S.

OP asked about it two years ago, has gotten several answers and likely no longer has the question. It hasn’t been replied to since last year before you bumped it. It is not the ‘main thread’ for anything.

The posts you shared is fairly normal stuff, no car is perfect. I’d say that because there isn’t anything more substantive it is further evidence that the 9A1 is as reliable as it’s reputation suggests.

As noted by wizee, the 3.8L 9A1 started production in 2008 with a 997.2. It has been in numerous cars with up to 430hp in a 991.1 GTS and 580hp in the Turbo S. The 385hp tune in the 981 is conservative and is the same engine used in the GT4 Clubsport racing cars. It is a robust engine.

The tides are not changing, that is the pot you’re trying to stir.

It's the same basic DFI engine as the 997.2 Carrera S thus a 10 year old design which is a fair descriptor. The only issues I'm aware of are the aluminium bolts on the cam chain cogs, the carbonising on the back of the inlet valves (a common issue with all DFI engines )and the engine compartment cooling fans which get plugged by track rubber or other debris and burn out.

hmmm...

keep in mind those other 997.2 and 991s were likely majority not tracked as hard as GT4 too.

I'm happy to say something is wrong when there is something wrong (I was vocal that the strut tower issue should be a sticky), but a few one off issues like the ones you posted don't necessarily mean that the tides are changing with regard to reliability. For that I'd need to hear 1-2 additional people pipe in and say they've had the same issue on each of those posts.

Let's also keep in mind that these engines were used in both GT4 clubsports that are raced extensively as well as 997.2 cars. Also, the GT4 clubsports have longer recommended rebuild times than the GT3 cup engines, that is, they are supposed to be lower maintenance.
