Reliability of GT4

Reliability of GT4
Hi guys,
I’m new to the forum. I’ve never bought a P car before, but fortunately I’m finally able to do so.
i would like to purchase the new 718 GT4 if possible.
However, after just a quick glance at the threads both here and on the 718 forum I am seeing quite a few threads on mechanical issues like frequent overheating, tranny failures, and other repairs on cars with low miles.
So I’m wondering...
Is the R and D and manufacturing process, materials, parts, attention to detail the same on the GT4 as it is on the GT3/2/RS or is it somewhat less?
Also if there is a PDK version, will the tranny failure be a non issue?
I may just wait until 2 years pass, so I can see if there are any issues with the new model, after some cars have logged 20-30k miles, including track miles.
Or I may just spend another 20k and buy a 911/991.2/992.
thanks

The third gear failure was due to a bad batch of welded parts. The problem has been corrected in the replacement transmissions and the costs were fully covered under warranty. Only manual transmissions were available in the current GT4. PDK transmissions seem to also occasionally have issues. I believe Porsche quality control is the same regardless of model or price. The early 991 GT3 had engine problems which Porsche corrected.

Echo the above, and my GT4 has been completely reliable after 10k miles. I'm not a track guy, but I do not believe I have seen any mention of overheating problems with the GT4. Maybe Porsches are a little less reliable overall than Toyotas...my wife got 405k miles on her previous Camry and has 340k on her current one, with only expected maintenance needed. Of course, those aren't track cars, regardless of what NASCAR would have you believe.

And with somethings the symptoms are not indicative of the actual failure. Mine currently keeps throwing a "Coolant System Malfunction" warning message that isn't a failure of the actual cooling system. It is a vacuum leak issue that we are working to resolve. Everything mechanical will at some point fail. I haven't seen anything here in reading around the board for a while that indicates these are more prone to failure than anything else. Of course the closer you get to the bleeding edge of performance the further away you get from reliability. I would walk into this not thinking you are going to get the same reliability as a Honda Accord.

The only notable issue is transmission problem alluded to above and this is also a non-issue as it’s replaced under warranty (not sure what’ll happen after the car goes out if warranty).
Havent heard of any other issues. There is a strut tower failure issue but that seems to apply to all new Porsches, not just GT4.

I think any new GT Porsche is very reliable and you should choose whichever you prefer with confidence that it will work well (or be fixed under warranty, should you be unlucky).

One of the benefits of the GT4 street and clubsport cars being so similar is testing and reliability. Funny how the one common mechanical issue we do have with the street cars is the 3rd gear problem and the clubsport runs pdk......

I would expect the 718 GT4 to be reliable. Generally the 981 GT4 is reliable. The 3rd gear failure is well known now and has been covered by warranty. (Mine has not broken yet with 3400 track miles). If the 718 GT4 has PDK I would have confidence in it. The 991 GT3 PDK has overall performed well. The 981 GT4 clubsport race car has PDK so Porsche will have that experience also. In any case for US cars the warranty is 4 years. The only other issue I've seen not mentioned already is the brake caliper piston "pucks" can crack. Requires caliper replacement or rebuild with alternate pistons. Have only seen this on track cars.

IMO...after 20K miles with several track weekends per year I think the 981 is a well above average reliable car.....the GT4 .2 should be as reliable (or better).

Built quality cannot be lower than that if the actual GT2RS/3RS/3, they all come with missing parts. So wouldn’t be worried about that aspect. My GT4 is flawless, except for the 3rd gear (I’m on the second gearbox).

But they give you those sort of mushy paddles to play with as a consolation prize.
That was about the only thing I didn't like about the PDK in the loaner they gave me. If the paddles had a nice positive click to them it would be a better experience.
