I would think that the vast majority of GT4 owners bought the GT4 because they wanted a mid-engine sports car and probably could afford the GT3 if they wanted one. Whether they will upgrade from the 981 to the 718 GT4 depends on the performance and final design. I'm currently driving a 981 GTS. Couldn't get a 981 GT4 allocation. On two lists for the 718 GT4. Prefer the 981 looks, but I'm confident we haven't seen the final 718 GT4 design (or at I'm hoping the rear diffuser is still disguised).
While the GT3 is "the" Porsche GT car to have, some desire value in the GT4 as something you can pound on for realitively less money then a 911 GT car while others rather the smaller package of the GT4 which echos back to the days of the smaller 911 era. Then there are the folks who believe the mid engine design is the best Porsche ever built.

My take on the GT4 is that there are fortunate people out there who desire a Porsche GT car as a secondary vehicle in their household. For weekend drives and maybe even a track day every now and then.

Then I saw the damn GT4. Best looking modern Porsche, period. Would have bought one if it had been more than a GT3 (well, it would have to get the 4.0 motor then, but you get my point). I'm fine with the power output (which I'm old enough to remember well when the GT3 first hit our shores and made a stupendous 380hp out of the 3.6.) The 4 is a very satisfying-to-drive car to me, and I am satisfied with it. It's very nice to get off the merrygoround for awhile.

For me the gt4 was about as high a price that I am willing to spend for a sports car and maybe even still a reach but I couldn’t be happier with the 981 gt4. I dream of the idea of upgrading to a gt3 at some point but in most cases it’s 50-60% the price for the one that would make me jump in. For the additional money I find the gt3 a much harder sell. Yes it’s faster, yes it’s “the” GT car to own but I don’t feel the performance is worth the extra $. Someday tho...

I love the 997 GT3s and less so the 991s, so to me the GT4 picks up where the GT3 took a wrong turn, and it’s in a package that is more modern than a 997 GT3 and cheaper too.
I wish that the engine in a GT4 was more of a screamer, but minor complaint relative to what it offers. IMO!
