Ahem.. I think it will be a v8.. and I can point to a million reasons inside my head why this is probable.

Based on the pictures, I am inclined to think it could be the 3L Turbo engine of the C2S. This would keep the cost the 718 GT4 down, it would be in line with what they did with previous GT4, it would help to comply with new stricter emissions rules and it would also match the exhaust styles we have been seeing on the mules.

Doesn't fit is relative. I can work at Porsche today and say the 6cyl turbo doesn't fit in the 718 chassis today. Or whenever that was stated. That's true. Does the 6cyl turbo fit in the 718 GT4? Maybe. Truth is no one knows. People forget the GT4 isn't exactly the same as the 981 GTS chassis for instance. I think the Chris harris video he explains why / where they changed the body in white.

Walliser, VP of Motorsport and GT cars just stated in an interview to Drive magazine that they will continue to make naturally aspirated engines for as long as possible because they add uniqueness to their cars.
He also stated that the NA & manual transmission combo is a popular setup and 50% of the GT3 sales in the US were with manual transmissions.
This is definitely good news for the next GT3 and maybe even the GT4. Here’s the link to the article:

How is a 4 cylinder engine going to compete in GT4 category even with BOP? Against Mercedes or Mclaren turbo v8’s and others in the class? I wouldn’t buy into that series with a 2.5 4 car. I’d have to buy a super vacuum space toilet to flush all the money.

Here is what is stated in the article instead of the rephrased version above:
Walliser said Porsche plans to hang on to naturally aspirated engines for as long as emission laws and regulations would allow it.

The GT3 also goes 198 mph, so that somewhat constrains how low the gearing can be.

The complaints about tall gearing for the GT4 is well documented, I don't think we have to reopen that discussion. I do think it's subjective and depends on driving style. Here in the Bay Area it definitely leaves me wanting because you're mostly in 3rd gear in a lot of tracks at the lower rpms which don't have anywhere near peak power.
