My definition of chat is some application with no logs, so when someone drops in, they don't know what was discussed before that.
Saying `I haven't been following the conversation, what about X?' makes sense in chat, but a forum topic instead contains a wealth of opinion and facts, able to be read by anyone at any time.
I see ExMB as the student who gets annoyed when the class is slowed down by someone who hasn't done the assigned reading.
Yeah, all of it is a time waster in the grand scheme of things.

LOL, I didn't realize someone was appointed to dictate how RL members get to use the forum. Seems like it's "open source" to me as long as it doesn't devolve into assholery of a degree that requires adult intervention. If somebody wants to drift off into convos about tequila, and somebody else wants to drop in and ask for a synopsis to avoid reading about tequila and turbo speculations, and somebody else wants to build a graph showing revs-in-gears plotted against FM-station-frequencies, well, they can just have at it. If the market doesn't want to answer the guy who wants a synopsis it simply won't happen. If somebody does want to answer it, it will be answered and those who find this distasteful can just skip it. As I have skipped many comments in this very thread.

But seriously I agree with the above post. If somebody wants to answer a post then have at it. If YOU don't then don't. Nothing really wrong with asking for a summary.

I will say though just skim through the thread to catch up, that's kind of why the thread retains all posts. Doesn't take long to skim. It's like reading a book, not every page is great but you read the whole book. But maybe that's why Coles Notes got started.
