Post Is Manhattan Beach World's Porsche Capital?

I just spent a couple of days in Manhattan Beach (California) and couldn't believe the Porsche population! 911s were as common there as Civics are at home. I also liked the fact that most of the cars were older "character" cars. I just sat, having a beer at Sharkeez, and watched the parade one rush hour.

So, people, what do you think? Where's the highest concentration of Porsches in the land? I'd bet MB ranks right up there. It was a good show.

I think you might be right....I know there are at least 4 other guys that regularly participate on the board. I was trying to explain this on another thread talking about why it is so difficult to wave/turn on-off lights in So Cal.

According to R.L. Polk & co. which gathers new car registration data in as many states as they are legally able. Southern California has the highest number of Porsche registrations. Specifically, LA county has the largest number of Porsche registrations of any county in the U.S. I'll try to get the exact numbers in the next few days.

Dave,
I had heard the same thing prior to moving to LA 4 years ago. I know that we have the only "new" Porsche Dealership in the US (Pacific Porsche) There was an article on one in the UK in last months Porsche World.

I am really interested in your results....

As for this side of the ocean, London has definitely got a very high p-car density per square foot.

When you go in the posh areas, you see Boxters, 993s and 996s all over the place.

Yesterday I was driving through Chelsea and I saw 3 996 Turbos within 10 seconds of each other. All silver, of course.

I was in a small town in Wisconsin last weekend, population 1100, and I bet I saw 150 Porsches. Really.

In the video "Porsche Victory By Design First" they made mention that there were more Porsche's in the state of California then the rest of the world combined.

Didn't have any numbers to back it up though....

If there's one thing you hate seeing, it's several other people around you with the same car. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it) I think most of the residents of Beverly Hills own stock in the company. There's a very high concentration of late model Porsches, including Boxters and the 996. The frustrating thing is how slow they like to drive them... but at least it gives you more time to admire the car. I hope I don't look half as snobby as most of the drivers, though.

There are a lot of early 911's and quite a few 80's cars in Manhattan Beach, but I am seeing a lot more 996's and Boxsters as well. Beverly Hills is another story though...I go to a lot of restaurants there for business and the valets are busy parking a lot of posers and their cars...mostly tiptronics and those that are not have probably never been over 3k rpms!

I try not to let them touch mine after a problem I had with my e30 m3 and an a-hole valet.

During the period: from John von Neuman's Dealership/shop- Competition Motors, in West Hollywood (he put Porsche on the map in the US-West of Missippi), mid-fifties till mid eighties; the percentage of cars that were sold in Southern California compared to total made hovered between 18 to 25% each year. In the early 1990's Champion Porsche, in Florida, became the number one seller, and has remained there for some time.

As a personal testomony, I drive a little over two miles to work each day. From Redondo Beach through Hermosa Beach to Manhattan Beach. I see a minimum of 8 Porsche each way. I am not even counting the 6 to 8 that park in the office areas at work. The most common is the Boxster (typically silver). However there is a good broad representation too; 912, 914, 944, 911, very few 928. I would also say that over 30% are driven by females too (typically Boxsters).

This must make So. Cal. the ideal place to look for used Porsches. <img src="graemlins/oops.gif" border="0" alt="[oops]" />

You should check out San Francisco. Unbelievable numbers of late model 911s, SC's, Carreras, and even more Boxsters.

Luckily there's a couple of 356s that manage to turn the most heads!!!
