The editor of a certain PCA region newsletter offers special recognition for region members who correctly identify the "fake" factory 900 project numbers within lists of street and race cars. Specificaly, those who wish to play are asked to identify the numbers the editor made up, and which do not correspond to an actual car sold on the market or raced by the factory. There are at least two fakes in each list.

STREET: 911, 912, 914, 915, 924, 928, 930, 932, 944, 959, 964, 968, 986, 993, and 996.
RACE: 904, 905, 907, 908, 909, 910, 917, 934, 935, 936, 956, 958, and 962.

Very special recognition is offered to anyone who can explain why the series began with a 9.

No, I'm not looking for help to get special recognition. I'm the one behind this. The 901 and 902 are not listed because I didn't want to start a fight. Play and post here if you want, but I will not be able to identify the fakes until the next newsletter is printed in a couple of weeks. Have fun, but please, no wagering.

915 is a transmission, I don't believe there was a 932 and I can account for all the other street numbers anyhow.

905 and 958 are the bogus race numbers.

Why 9 ? An antique computer in the parts department spit it out as a good combination of numbers that where not being used = 901 ?

Porsche started with the 900 series because at the time in the early 60's they were trying to intergrate their parts and service operations with VW. They wanted their parts numbers to become compatible with the ones that VW used and when they looked in the computers at Wolfsburg the only catogory that was free was the 900 series.

Alot of people have the missconception that the 901 was the 901st project in the sequence of studies that the porsche design office had used since it started. I think its funny that Porsche started with the number 7 because they didn't want Wandere Werke thinking that they were their first customers.

932 was a 924 Turbo, Right Hand Drive
905 was the Sportomatic Transmission
909 1968 Experimental Hill Climb Car
958 ?

BTW, did you know the Porsche number for the Cayenne is 955?

Don, but there's supposed to be at least two bogus numbers from each category... if the 932 really is a 924 Turbo, then which is the second bogus one from the first series? All the other ones are real.

Riccardo, only thing I can think of is that they were talking about US cars. After all there weren't that many 924 Turbos made altogether, and even fewer with RHD. (I'm 99% sure on the 932) Maybe you'll win a prize for knowing more than the editor!

Stephen, that is correct but with right hand drive the model was 932, same thing goes for the 951 (952 was RHD I believe.)

915 is a gearbox
905 is the "sportmatic" gearbox

I've never heard of the 958. It must be fictitous or a part number for something obscure.

932 is the RIGHT HAND DRIVE 931 (924 turbo)

I've heard of the 909 hillclimber, so I know it existed, but I don't know anything else about it.
