Does Rinspeed actually work on actual cars, or are they just a rendering house. "You can even buy one of these horrid things for the GNP of Belize". Hell, for that kind of money you could get Chip Foose to build you a one-off from the ground up.

Companies such as Rinspeed in the concept car business play a huge role in what we see appear in our cars.
If you read some Porsche history you will see that Porsche started contracting out to concept car companies in the 1980s. Some of their own designs in the concept department were pretty way out for their times.
Porsche along with many other companies have a Design Studio. Their job is to explore design to push the envelope.
In fact there is one version of the 944 which owes its existence to a concept car company and an American sunroof manufacturer.
Rinspeed themselves are contracted by many major manufacturers to develop new materials, new tyres, improve aerodynamics. The list is long and endless.
Their designs may not be to everyone's liking but that is the role of the concept car manufacturer. To go where others fear to tread. Rinspeed happen to one of the best.
I also guess from the comments that "Hot Rods" are no longer popular among the younger Porsche owners. The first concept cars were the Hot Rods.
Everytime a Porsche owner modifies his or her car past a certain point they are changing the concept of the car in question. Changing the design, improving things. Without such companies as Rinspeed the world of car development would stand still.

I love hotrods. Hell, I'm putting a WRX engine into my 911T for crying out loud! I just dislike when there aren't any lines to a car (see Patritti kit in the first link) or when details are ill-conceived (subwoofers in the folded roof area? where does the *roof* go?). You want hot rods? These are hotrods:

someone on the subaru boards put a wrx motor into their 912 i forget who the name was but ill try to find if for ya

let me know if that worked. the guy's name on the board is steve_d, and i think i made a mistake - it wasnt a wrx motor but it still was a flat subaru motor of some kind. i think it might be a 1.8L legacy motor

There was also a web site around somewhere that detailed a flat-6 (H6) engine installation into a 914. It looked good and was clean. Funny how most people (up to this point) don't get all weirded out when a Japanese engine is mentioned in the same sentence as the P-car. Ironically, the blueprints for the flat 6 subaru engines were oringinally from a German manufacturer. I know this for a fact as I have two trucks from the 50s that were manufactured by said company before they went out of business in 1961. Ironic and true.

Yeah, Steve's one of my best friends. He and I are putting the WRX motor into my 911T as soon as his is finished. It's in paint now!
