Been debating whether to put a deposit down now or wait for the hybrid version. What do you guys think?

In all honesty, think the 992 still has to have a couple of iterations before there is a hybrid 992…993h? I’m guessing ~ 5 more years. My thoughts were…get the ICE 992 now, have fun with it for the next 5+ years, and then when the hybrid is released, you can (maybe) sell your 992 as the last ICE 911? I guarantee you that purists, those that will have nothing to do with a hybrid or EV 911, will line up around your house wanting to buy your car.

Carpe Diem.

Why do you want a hybrid 911? Fuel economy? 911s with gasoline engines are plenty fast and get decent fuel economy. Hybrid may add some additional power but also weight. May not be able to get a manual with a hybrid powertrain.

It will get a hybrid power train when Porsche has to offer one. The sales of the Taycan made the GT3 NA engine possible from a CO2 perspective. Sales of the 718 and Macan EV replacements will buy Porsche more time.

The .2 and likely .3 refreshes are likely a ways off for the 992. It just got a completely new PCM. COVID is pushing the timeline out.

I think an electric boosted flywheel will appear in the drivetrain of 992.2 Turbo, probably as a 2024 model?

When that boosted flywheel shows up in the regular Carrera line is tough to predict. Probably not until the next full refresh. The 994 in 2028 or 2029?

Some 911 models, especially GT cars, will never go hybrid.

I wouldn't bet on that - it's kind of already happened:

I will bet on it, the GT and certain street versions of the 911 will never be electrified or hybrid.

The 918 tech is the future of the top-tier 911 models only, the Turbo.

When the inevitable happens, I hope the 911 only does hybrid, and not full EV (because I’m addicted to that growl). But if Porsche offers a 911 hybrid that will save me some gas, and still out accelerate the current lineup of 911’s (and it will)…well, count me in.

“It might come somewhat as a surprise, but Porsche originally unveiled a hybrid 911 back in March 2010 at the Geneva Motor Show. That wasn't a road car as it took the shape of a 911 GT3 R Hybrid destined for endurance racing. It boasted a Williams-developed kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) and a pair of electric motors working with a flat-six 4.0-liter engine. An updated model dubbed 911 GT3 R Hybrid 2.0 followed a year later with more power coming from the dual e-motors as well as a weight loss to make the electrified race car more competitive in the Nürburgring 24H. In the years that passed, multiple reports speculated about Porsche's plans to introduce road-going 911 with a hybrid powertrain, but it never happened. Fast forward to the second half of 2021, it would appear the electrified machine from Zuffenhausen is finally inching closer.”

Sorry, Carlo, but they are coming. Pure ICE lovers better grab their wives, children and animals and head inside!! Hybrids and/ or EV’s will permeate (eventually) all 911’. The path to faster, more fuel efficient cars is clear.

Besides all the technological hurdles, Porsche has a daunting marketing issue facing it….ie, a hybrid or EV 911 (no mater what flavor) is likely to anger the legions of die-hard 911 ICE lovers. For fear of alienating that part of their fan base, Porsche will have to gently ease into this market. Case in point - I remember back in 2015/2016 I was considering getting Porsche’s mid-engine 718S…and all the flack/push-back Porsche was getting when it announced it was moving production from it’s normally aspirated engine, to smaller, turbo powered engines for the 718. So even moving to turbo’s, was a big deal for many Porsche fanboys. .. ergo, the eventual move to hybrid/EV will be every bit as controversial (from a marketing standpoint).

I disagree, for the next twenty+ years Porsche will have a 911 version with just an ICE and a manual transmission available for purchase, just like there are still non-turbo charged and non-PDK models available now.

Why do think they are investing so heavily in synthetic fuels?

Sooner than one might think.

The 992 chassis was designed with a hybrid system in mind. We’re talking mild hybrid as in a 48v system a la Mercedes, or the e-hybrid Panamera.

The 992 GT2 RS will most likely be hybrid.
