Default Would you buy a new Porsche without a dealer nearby?

This is the situation. I’m interested in a 718 GT4, it would be my first Porsche, after a few BMW’s. I live on Maui. The dealership is on Oahu, a separate island. There’s no bridge. Cars do get shipped back and forth fairly regularly, but it’s a bit of a pain and can be logistically difficult. The cost is a few hundred dollars.

There is an independent service shop on Maui, which has experience with servicing Porsches, but it is not officially affiliated with Porsche in any way.

So, to sum up, want Porsche, no dealership easily accessible. Warranty work is possible, but a bit painful.

From Porsche owners, how big of a deal is this? Reasonable to proceed? Or abandon this course?

I was thinking the same thing. Odds are if you have any problems they are going to be minor and if by chance something major does arrive you can have them come and get it, or have it taken to them - I thought they have to take it to the nearest Porsche dealer if you break down? Otherwise you could get an aftermarket warranty through Fidelity if you really want peace of mind but personally I would not.

I made a similar choice--though not faced with living on a separate island. The dealer closest to me is in Albuqurqe, over 200 miles away. The dealer I prefer and have visited for maintenance is in Colorado Springs, more than 300 miles away. They did tell me that for warranty service, they would arrange and pay for transportation. Ask the dealer on Oahu, assuming you buy the car from them, how they can assist with service transport.

My nearest dealership is a couple hours away in all directions. I was a bit nervous as well, but I figured I'd go for it anyway.

Do you know anyone on your island with a Porsche? Is there a club you could join? That may help you if there's ever a problem.

I have seen a few newer cars on island and hope to talk to some of their owners.

I don't know if the local dealer takes on any responsibility for arranging for car to be shipped back to them. When I talked to the service department, I kind of got the sense that it would be entirely on me.

See what the sales staff might promise (and get it in writing).

Here is a thought - call Porsche 24-Hour Roadside Assistance at 1-800-PORSCHE, and ask them about their coverage in Hawaii...

This is a good idea. Had not thought of that. Will try and see where that goes.

I live in rural Montana with my nearest dealer 350+ miles away and I thought I had issues.

Good luck.

I did exactly that. Car has been good. Until rock and ac condenser met at high speed. Porsche towed it 280 miles for free to get it fixed.

Did they tow it back to you?

they did not. It was not warrantied since it was road damage. But they didn’t charge for the tow. I called and they had a wrecker come within 45 minutes, no questions asked. Pretty damn good service.
