Hi All,

I’m an avid track day driver in my Boxster S and am looking to set up a home iRacing system for off track fun. I’m a retired electrical engineer, so I’m good with hardware, but since I’ve never been a gamer, I’m not familiar with the modern parts that make up a good system. I’ve been reading posts and blogs and starting to learn… but still a total newbie! I’m looking to build a decent starter/mid-range system and my budget plan is about $3,000.

I’ve listed below what I’m shopping for, feel free to comment on my choices! The big question seems to be the right combination of GPU card and display. Seems to be a tradeoff between high resolution and refresh rates, so while I initially assumed a 4K, 34” curved monitor would be good, some don’t have high refresh rates. Is there a ‘sweet spot’ display that provides high refresh with reasonably high resolution? Seems like a lot of racers like the Samsung CHG90 series but it is lower resolution.

On the GPU, seems the Nvidia 2080 is a common choice, but is the 8 GB memory enough? I thought I heard of one guy who had the 2080 with 16 GB, but I don’t see that as an option.

So here is my list:
  • Computer: IBUYPOWER or similar, i7, 32 GB, 500 GB SSD, 750 Watt PS - $2,200 with GPU below
  • GPU: NVIDIA RTX 2080, 8 GB RAM
  • Monitor Options:
    • LG 34GK950F-B Curved Gaming Monitor, 34” 21:9, 3440 x 1440, HDR400, 144 Hz - $876
    • LG 34WN80C-B, 34”, 21:9, 3440 x 1440, HDR10, 60 HZ - $549
    • Asus Predator X34, 34”, 3440 x 1440, 100 Hz - $849
    • Samsung CHG90, 49”, 32:9, 1080P, 144 Hz - $1,000
  • Wheel/Pedals: Logitech G29 - $400
  • Headset: TBD
  • Seat: I have this covered, I bought a used sport seat from a 911, so it’s a real car seat!
  • Chassis: I’ll build this myself, mimicking all the seat, pedal, & wheel location dimensions from my Boxster. I know it needs to be very sturdy to withstand strong braking forces…
Thanks in advance for your opinions!
Tim
Have you thought about VR? Also RTX3 series is gonna be out pretty soon I think. You may want to wait and future proof your PC a few more another year or 2.

My pleasure for a fellow Connecticut guy (it's where I was from). If you can turn a screwdriver and have a grounding strap for your wrist you can build a computer. I agree with some of the other comments, the prices should drop on the RTX 20 series when the RTX 30 series is released, you may even find a used 2080 ti or Titan a while after that. But of course that will always be the case. If building (or buying) now you buy what is out now and bite the bullet. As for VR, if you can't try out a top of the line Ryft S or Primax don't buy one hoping it won't make you sick, and those will all have new/better versions a year from now. As for the gear, you buy whats in your budget. I went with a Fanatec Clubsport wheel base with BMW GT2 wheel ($850), but went with the Thrustmaster T-LCM pedals ($200) and love them (vs the Clubsport V3 pedals for $500). Coming out of a race car I didn't want a mini-size steering wheel (like the Logitech uses), I actually machined an adapter when I had an older Logitech and bolted my spare race car wheel to it!.

Thanks Squeaky. I figured I would start with a decent monitor first and then try VR later on once I get some skill in the iDriving! I saw an article yesterday that the RTX3 series may be prices at $2,000, so that is well beyond 'starter system' territory. I think the RTX 2080 will be good for a while at least.

Thanks Gary, Where in CT are you from?
I like the idea of the full size wheel, I'm trying to make the setup as car like as possible... Do the Thrustmaster pedals have the load cell to give true braking pressure? I thought only the Fanatec pedals had that...

I know this thread hasn't been updated in a month but the 30 Series cards are available for purchase this week.

IIRC:

3070 ~ $500
3080 ~ $700
3090 ~ $1400

I'm sure like most others on here, I picked up iRacing to experience more DEs/Races while improving my skill in the real world.

I noticed in iRacing that you don't have to clutch in to downshift. Does anyone still clutch downshift for more immersion and real life training, or am I being a total bafoon? If you've purchased an H Pattern, are you getting any use out of it? I've noticed that the Miata seems to be one of the only H Pattern Road Cars on iRacing, it would be great if they added more Vintage Racers + Series.

I will be joining the PCA Series once I get further along in iRacing, are there any Rennlist leagues?

I still clutch in. As far as immersion goes, you can downshift w/o clutch in your irl car too.

Auctioning off some iRacing memberships (or credits if you already have a membership) along with head-to-head matches that will be more fun than competitive (these pros say they suck at sim).

AUCTION CLOSES TONIGHT at 9PM.

PCA Sim Racing (https://pcasimracing.com/) produced a turn-by-turn guide in a GT4 for this week's race at Road Atlanta:

From Woodbury. The TM T-LCM pedals are described here
  • "Load Cell force sensor technology: up to 220 lb / 100 kg of pressure, for the perfect amount of braking power."
and there are a lot of reviews out there. As for the RTX3080, I am seeing them advertised for about $700 here so I would think that is about what I paid for my 2080 a year ago..

3080's were snagged by Bots before they even hit the shelves. They are going for insane amounts on e-bay. 3090 releases today but at $1500 it's performance gains don't justify double the price. The 3080RTX with 20gb memory they already leaked specs on will be the card to have...

Paul, its always the same BS when a new card arrives, I would just put myself on Auto-Notify (for NewEgg US anyway) and wait for the email to come in a month or so.

This one was exceptionally bad. Supposedly none of the cards actually hit the shelves and no one got notified (myself included) before they moved from "coming soon" to "sold out" Nvidia had to come out and apologize the release was so bad. For me it was a blessing, 3080 with 10GB isn't going to cut it with a lot of DX12 titles and the 3090 at $1500 for 24GB of memory is ludicrous so a 20GB 3080 Super is perfect for me For now like you my 2080 does everything I need!

It seems like getting the new Nvidia cards is going to be a bit like buying Heusinkveld pedals, at least for a while.

Our 2080 seems to be handling the iRacing graphics load just fine, but the red "rendering" bar on top often indicates that the CPU (i7 with 32GB memory) is overloaded. That seems to be the performance bottleneck more than the graphics card.

So THAT is what the red bar is showing! I'm a newbie, just got my system put together, and have been slowly learning the application. But I had no idea what the red/green, growing/shrinking bar was right below the rear view mirror. Now I know! I also have the i7 with 32 GB and am running the RTX 2080.
