Default WTB inexpensive bare bones set-up

Looking to purchase a in car camera and some type of overlay that would display MPH and RPM, anything else would be nice but not necessary.

Only going to use a couple times a year.

2003 996 C2 non-turbo

Thanks

Yi Camera $100.
RaceRender3 $50.
AIM Solo $400.

About $550 plus a PC/Laptop to run RaceRender3 on. You will have to post process and this won't include RPM. Video will be HD. Anything that does it real time will be even more. If you need RPM you are over a kilobuck. Only other way for less is going used.

There are also phone apps, but they are toys IMHO.

I did the following with a Yi, RaceRender3, and a Traqmate+Traqdata:

If he's only going to use it twice a year, it sounds like a "toy" is perfect for generating neat video to share. I don't see much point to RPM. If you're using video overlay, mph is probably the most useful thing to tell you exit/entrance speeds. G-overlay is usually cheap and interesting.. possibly useful.

Personally, I'd rather have something like an AIM solo or a used traqmate to give me predictive lap time delta if you're at a track where you know the line. If you're going to a new track or you're just new to track driving in general, plain old video is the best tool so you can see if you're on line and show it to people to get their advice.

Good point about RPM; added cost/complexity is probably not worth the trouble, given the benefit, especially if you're only looking to run it a couple times per year.

Here's an example of a video using Harry's Lap Timer on an iPhone with the BT1A OBDII adapter. You will need to be a little tech savy but it's pretty good for a toy.

It will also give you shift lights, GSum Charts with +/- shadow of reference lap, real time predictive +/- for sector and lap, and has most tracks predefined.

HLT - $25
BT1A - $120
Ram Suction Mount - $45

If you really want a toy, get HLT. If you have a decent smartphone it will be hard to find anything cheaper.

Nice. I highly recommend taking the time to read all of the current documentation if you haven't had a chance to yet. There is a lot more to that little program than I would have imagined.

That does look nice.
I went with a basic setup from Matt R..

That's what I use, if you'd like to see some video using race render to pull the data shoot me a PM.
