Want to buy a Porter Cable 7424 but my head is spinning
Hello all,
I have done extensive research in the archives and am ready to buy a Porter Cable 7424 from Coastal Tool, I think, (http://www.coastaltool.com/cgi-bin/S...a8e+1188568430) but am absolutely confused by the myriad of different types of polishing pads one can buy from Autogeek and Autopia. Can anyone direct me to a place where I can find an industry-standard kit that has all of the pads I need? (Please don't tell me to go to Griots; Richard doesn't need another Ferrari.)
Thanks for any help!

Hi Mark
Autopia has a lot of info and loves to sell the PC; they often have specials. They sell a pad kit.
I used mine on the 993 and got great results. Start with clay, work your way up.
Speaking of my 993, its in the shop for a new 3rd gear; the previous gear chipped a tooth on the last of 6 days at Canadian tracks, so i can't complain about the timing.
I am missing my track time, though. I am actually going to a DE and just instructing; I used to think that people that didn't drive but only instructed were crazy.

Thanks, Rick. Do you have a link to the kit? Autopia has a zillion of them, and I have no idea which is the correct one to get.
Sorry about your gears. I'll bet that bill won't be cheap.

Thanks for your sympathy; nothing comes cheap on the Porsche.
My paint was in decent to good shape, but I wanted more.
Where you start depends on the current condition of your paint, and how much time you want to spend. I don't bother with the polisher for routine polishing; its easier to do it by hand. But, if the surface needs that once in awhile extra special polishing, the PC is great.
There is a ton (too much) info on the Autopia site, but here is what I did:
Start by claying the surface.
Work your way up with the PC from pad 1 through pad 3.
If the surface really needs work, clay then use the swirlbuster pad and polish. http://www.autopia-carcare.com/sonsbfpp.html. Then pads 1-3. I'm not convinced that each step is necessary.
Like I said, too much info!
You can start here for the polisher and pads:

Have fun; be careful when polishing near the trim.

this Kit is $180

but looking back I should have gotten the Cyclo. Seems to be the best option for removing swirls in the quickest amount of time without going to a rotary.

The cyclo was made for use on vehicle mfg paint finishing lines (as opposed to a sander adapted for polishing)
Having used both the P-C and a Cyclo I would recommend the Cyclo without hesitation (Phil's kit will provide all you'd need for paint correction/polishing)

I use the meguiar's pads sold at www.autodetailingsolutions.com the 8006 polishing and the 9006 finishing pads have been great for me on both the PC, and my rotary.
