V6 or V8?
Basically, as the title says. I'm contemplating what engine choice (hence the trim level) would be best for a people hauler and which one is more "reliable".
I am thinking either to order a V6 with a luxury interior options, or get the S with a V8 but with less options. Let's assume that price-wise those would be the same specs.
Re-sale value doesn't bother me. I'm keeping a car for at least 10 years.

What are you going to use the car for? What other cars do you own? Who will be driving it and how? What features do you find "a must", "nice to have" and "ok, maybe I'll stretch the budget".
Examine these questions and the Porsche Spec Magic 8 ball (PSMEB) will grant your answer!

If you would even consider a V6, then you don't need a V8. If cost is an issue get the nicest base you can

The V8 in the GTS is a great engine. I haven’t driven the current 2.9 but the 4.0 is far superior to the 2016 with the 3.6 turbo. The 4.0 has also delivered better highway mpg than the 3.6 which is most of our driving. On the highway the engine is very quiet. An advantage of the louder exhaust is it serves as an advance warning for the passenger to hang on.

The GTS V8 is pure ****… it sounds intoxicating … no way I would get this car without the V8.
I was looking for more sport … I opted for a lightly but nicely optioned GTS instead of a loaded up S.
the luxury stuff was less important than the performance stuff… YMMV

Tbh the 2.9 is pretty sweet on my Macan but felt and sounded mediocre when I had a Cayenne S as a loaner. If you want a nice 6 cylinder I recommend BMW but you'd be sacrificing driving dynamics and feel because my X5 40i feels like a boat with the air suspension. Comfortable, but does not handle that well and feels every bit like a 5000lb SUV which Im sure you dont want as youre looking at Cayennes. So imo its gotta be the V8

100%. Never drove the M but the regular models have ton of body roll and 0 steering feel. Is the M actually feel slower than a GTS with 175 less hp?

the M50 felt awful - like a minivan with a V8 in it. The second you hit the ash the whole thing floats and feels unstable. Not sporty at all. The M comp was planted and felt quick but also felt super heavy. The X5M felt like the M50 with upgrade suspension and more power - it felt like an SUV trying to act like a sports car.
the GTS feels like a sports car that is pretending to be an SUV…. It’s all sportiness … the GTS drives like a sorts car… an SUV shouldn’t be so good.
I wouldn’t take the X5M over the GTS. In the one hour delay between the two test drives - I didn’t notice the GTS being any slower but totally noticed the better driving dynamics. And better build quality and nicer materials.
Cayenne feels a level up in quality.
my $.02

Those referring to the sound, this isn't going to sound like a GTS. It should have B8 sound to a degree but not like that, even with sport exhaust as they do special tuning for the GTS and I assume the latest GPF regs are going to further strangle any rumble. Not to say it isn't worth it but let's see how it sounds at the launch. To the OPs question, I can't stand V6s, they always seem to be much more rough/vibrate especially at idle in an unpleasant way and they uniformly sound bland to bad. Easy choice - money priority goes to motor first, trim second.

Agree. Inline 6 or V8. I’ve made the mistake of being practical, not doing that again. It was an expensive mistake for me.

My direct experience is limited to several base Cayenne loaners equipped with the v6, and my Audi S8 equipped with a similar v8, and the v8 is superior, hands down.
in particular, the refinement of the v8 is hard to believe. By that, I mean, how can an engine deliver such effortless power, but also be capable of such silent and vibration free operation that I frequently have to look at the tach to see if it’s even running? And I should add, the engine in my S8 is the EA824, whereas the Cayenne v8 is the EA825, an evolution which is claimed to be even better than the EA824. Even in COD four cylinder mode, there is absolutely no sensation of switch over or increase in NVH at any point over the RPM range. Simply amazing, and the highway MPG , based on window stickers, is better on my S8 rated at 605 HP then on the v6 Cayennes I’ve driven; both similar weight and same transmission. Mike
