Default TIL: Night vision Washer fluid

Was reading the manual (thanks @Schnave ) and noticed a curious detail, which is washer fluid capacity is 50% larger if you option Night View.

Approx. 0.9 gals (3.5 liters) (vehicles with Night View Assist: approx. 1.6 gals (6.2 liters))

Guessing it uses washer fluid to wash the night vision? On a side note always wondered if car headlights and cameras get washed automatically or when you deploy it manually with the control sticks.

I’m not sure why washer fluid capacity differs with night vision. Curious. I checked to see if the camera had a cooled sensor. It does not. It is a 320 x 240 pixel, 24° FOV, f/1.0 NV3 Autoliv Night Vision Camera. More on the technology here on page 5:
https://moscow.sci-hub.se/2167/73207...?download=true
More here:
https://www.motorbiscuit.com/inside-...ision-cameras/

Many dismiss the utility of the optional Night Vision Assist. It’s easy to see why; when you look at the night vision screen it is difficult to see objects. But that’s not the point. The system works in the background, whether the night vision screen is displayed or not. It detects people and animals beyond the range of the headlights. When the system detects a pedestrian or animal, it automatically switches the right instrument cluster to the night vision display and highlights the hazard in yellow.

The system immediately primes the brakes to be ready for an emergency stop. If the object is classified as a hazard, the highlight changes to red and the left instrument cluster shows a large warning indicating a pedestrian or animal.

Now here’s the really cool part. In vehicles equipped with fully functioning PDLS+ (maybe soon here in the US) the lights will flash a narrow beam highlighting the pedestrian. This alerts the pedestrian AND points out the pedestrian to the driver. Even cooler part — the system is smart enough to NOT flash an animal, since that may cause the “deer in the headlights” freeze response. How cool is that?

No, it doesn’t wash the night vision camera. Good idea though!

The previous generation Cayenne had headlight washers. Not so for the E3 Cayenne. You can wash the windshield by pulling back in the wiper lever. To wash the rear window, push the wiper lever forward. This also activates a jet-spray on the rear camera. Try it — put your Cayenne in reverse to view the rear camera on the PCM. Then push the wiper lever forward. You’ll see the sprayer wash the camera. 😎

If you notice a dripping sprayer or blue streaks on your license plate, the check valve in the sprayer is leaking. Read all about it in this thread:

Glad I got NV that's pretty nice to know . Haven't had it activate automatically for humans but will keep it in mind now.
Narrow beam thing looks like a great touch to increase pedestrian safety.

I was curious about the increased size of the washer fluid and did a search in the manual. Here's what I found:

From p189 of the 2021 manual:

Cleaning Night View Assist camera
When the windshield washer system is operated repeatedly, the Night View Assist camera is automatically cleaned.

I guess that explains the need for the extra fluid, Dave

Great research, dasams! I neglected to check the 2021 manual. When reading your great post, I wondered what the “operated repeatedly” meant. Found it on page 330:

”During every 10th washing process, the Night View Assist camera is cleaned at the same time.”

Here’s why I’m scratching my head: While the 2019 manual addresses the extra fluid capacity, it doesn’t mention the Night View Assist washing. So I just finished a test on my 2019 Cayenne to see if it worked but was undocumented.

I brought up the NVA display in the cluster and performed 10 windshield washes. No NVA wash. Repeated additional 15 washes. Still no NVA wash. Performed 10 rear window washes. Rear camera washes each time — still no NVA wash. Double checked the NVA camera: Bone dry.

Either my NVA washer is broken or they intended to implement that feature but didn’t follow through — just like Remote Park Assist and Trailer Maneuver Assist.

Here’s my 2019 NVA camera. I don’t see any provision for a spray washer. It obviously needs cleaning!

Anyone with a 2021+ care to post a picture so we can document how it works?

And here's my night vision camera. @Schnave it looks a lot like your camera (except mine is dirtier) and I did not see any sign of a washer sprayer.

Looks like we have a mystery. Porsche claims we have a Night View Assist camera cleaner but neither my 2019 nor your 2021 model has one.

I see that Audi has a a washer fluid nozzle on their cameras. I see none on ours. I feel cheated!

Anybody with a 2022 or 2023 have a washer nozzle on their NVA camera? Or is Porsche lying to us all?

My 22 looks the same except it’s covered with bugs. Need to wash the Cayenne.

Cleaned the bugs off

@Schnave Have you seen this diagram? I checked and I can feel either a tube or wire behind the plastic cover in the vicinity of 9 and 10 in the drawing. https://www.lllparts.co.uk/catalogs/...1/9/911/911040

Good catch rdboxter! I see that now. I shoved my endoscope up there for a little probing. Looks like a washer hose connection to the back of the camera. But where is the nozzle? Why is the camera lens dry after 10+ windshield washes? The mystery deepens . . .

Maybe certain conditions must be met beyond the 10 windshield washings. When you tested was the engine running and night vision activated? Also can you fit the scope between the lens and the plastic cover? Maybe see the jet to the right.

Yes, engine running and I had the NV screen displayed. 10 complete wash cycles, each time until wiper stopped. Then did 15 cycles same way. Test conducted during daylight with outside air temp above threshold for pedestrian detection. I’ll try again at night once this heat wave abates.

No space to fit scope between lens and cover.

Regardless of nozzle location, if the washer actuated I would expect to see:
1) image distortion on the display during wash
2) a wet lens or washer fluid dripping around camera immediately after the wash. No evidence of either so far.
3) cleaner lenses than our photos depict 😀
