Default Oil Sample Results

I had my first oil change and sent a sample to Blackstone. Overall great report, except the iron content was 25 ppm, a bit above the “Universal Average”. That seems like a pretty broad definition. Is that average for all V8’s or all Porsche engines? Or is it specifically for a Porsche 4.0L twin turbo?

So, I’m curious how this compares with any others who had their Cayenne’s oil analyzed. Are my numbers in the ballpark?

As if I ever keep a vehicle long enough to require an engine rebuild or replacement......

I queried Blackstone about the Universal Average. Good news and bad news:

The Good: The Universal Average is specifically for the Porsche 4.0L V8 twin turbo engine.

The Bad: The sample size is only eight, so not much data for comparison.

From Blackstone:
”The universal averages are specific to the Porsche 4.0L Turbo V-8. For many engines we have thousands of samples in the averages file, but admittedly we're still building up the averages for this particular engine -- currently there are only 8 samples, but the pool of samples is growing all the time.”

And with an average must necessarily come a standard deviation. With a sample size of 8, the standard deviation is large relative to the mean. So hard to put any weight on the number.

Agreed. They were not aware the same EA825 engine is installed in Panamera, Audi, Lamborghini, and Bentley — I gave them a complete model list and suggested they combine the database. They thought it was a good idea and may do so.

This is a general statement/somewhat kidding so please don’t take offense to it. I’m kind of surprised they have 8 samples as the Turbo crowd doesn’t seem to be the biggest DIY bunch. I suppose the dealer could grab a sample. I lump myself in there to now though as I used to do all my own oil changes but got tired of doing them as I got older. Then go figure my first oil change in my Cayman and with Porsche they overfill it and had to re do it.

Thanks for doing this and all of the other things though, good to see and fun to read.

^^^ No worries, @minn19 . I’m also a DIY’er and no stranger to getting my knuckles busted. But this Cayenne is a computer network on four wheels. Heck, you need an $800 computer to reset the oil light! So I swallowed my pride and had the dealership change my oil. I gave him the Blackstone sample kit; he said his mechanics are quite familiar with it and often take samples for customers.

Modern vehicles are quickly outrunning my ability to keep my toolbox up to date with the technology. Even simple sound system mods are complicated since they switched to fiber-optic MOST Bus. Copper wiring is now antiquated technology. Who’d have thought? I had to buy an expensive fiber optic converter just to add an iPhone interface to my wife’s Mercedes.

Maybe it’s time for this old dog to sit on the porch and watch the big dogs run . . .

My limited knowledge tells me your car is still being broken in nicely. The report also provides a good look at the latest, stout formula of the M1 0W40 C40.

Thanks s85b50. That make sense and makes me feel better about the iron level. You know, I hadn’t put the two together, but your thinking is in line with my recent experience breaking in a new portable inverter generator. After the first one hour run, the drained oil was shimmering with metallic particles. After the second one hour run the drained oil looked much better.

I'm just under 18K on my 2020 Turbo. I'll keep this in mind in 2 or 3 months and post results.
Thanks!

First ever Blackstone analysis for me, and first for my 2020 S. Blackstone turnaround time was 3 weeks from when the sample left my hands to receiving the email and report.

Oil spec is unknown because it was as-purchased CPO from a dealer in San Francisco. I refilled with Mobil 1 ESP 0W-30, so the next test will have a known-certain oil type.

Some high numbers. I will dig around the interwebs for 2.9TT comparable results.

I just stumbled on this report for a 3.6 liter Mitu V-6 from Bob's the Oil Guy (about same mileage on oil). I plan on getting an oil sample on mine at 4K coming up soon for the 1st change on the 2023. About 100 hours operation.

Also use them for the 997 2006 Carrera.

Latest Blackstone report. Looks OK. Next oil change likely before the end of the year.
