Hi,
I'm about buying a CD and looking for one from 2012-2013. We already saw two of them with this issue, one just a small leak that I posted pictures about on other topic (sorry, hope someone will join them) and the other one didn't need a lift because the oil was dripping in the showroom floor on both parts of the under engine tray.
I'm almost thinking about leaving the CD for some other competitor 3L diesel (sorry, everything above 3L is way to much for tax, example the CD V8 is 2k per year!).

So, my question, is this a very common for the 2013 only and even if I'm buying it now clear it could start soon to loose oil or if I avoid the 2013 then I'll be in more luck?
Is there a TSB regarding this?
If it's an engineering design or material used issue, why I've never heard of a goodwill repair?

I'm located in Romania, EU. We were looking for cars from Western part of EU (Germany, Netherlands, Belgium) because they are better maintained. Most second hand cars are out of warranty.

Unfortunately I'm almost thinking to skip the 245 HP and go for the facelift 2014 model with the 258 HP hoping for better or skip Cayenne at all but I don't know a good alternative (Range Rover, Infinity, Lexus?).

I just talked to another former owner of a CD (2012 year) and he told me that he had 4 times the car for this in the service.

This is not a serious leak. I would not repair it if it is out of warranty. Just watch the oil level. It is not like the Mercedes OM642 oil cooler leak although the mercedes fix is cheaper than this.

Later cars do have a new casting in the block to correct this leak but you have to decide if the premium in price is worth it. As for the increase in hp, that is something a $1200 tune can do easily..

BMW diesels are holding up long term.

This.

I saw mine and characterized it as a seepage not a leak. If you have an air-cooled Porsche you know what leaks can look like. Mine didn't seep enough to need oil between changes.

What is considered normal oil usage for these cars in the 90k mile range? I've started to lose 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart in the 5k interval; sometimes it is accelerated.

Has anyone with oil usage noticed moisture on the underside of the oil fill cap?

Just confirmed this with a loaner last weekend. Pleasant enough SUV if you like them slow. CD just feels so much more powerful.

The two markets seems so different (US vs EU). In EU, the service plan is for 30.000Km. In US is much lower. I understand though the diesel quality is very different and you can get a very bad diesel in some states, am I right?

On the seepage side, let's say a 1 full quart between service might be ok, although I'm used with cars that don't need any oil added. My concern is that with time, the seepage will become a leakage. Anyway, I've found one CD from 2012 that the owner states "it's like desert"down there. He sent me pictures but only differentials though.
On the other hand, this flaw might be similar to Touareg and Q7 and in Bucharest, man, only Cayennes are so popular that I might see at least one every 20 minutes. So I think if this problem is so common, then the independents can do it fast and cheap here so might be that the premium price for the 2014 facelift won't worth that much. Chip tuning is also fairly cheap here, almost all premium cars are done from 300 to 500 Euro price.

I had two BMW, both diesel and both sharing the same 2L engine but different power. The engine block itself rock solid. But both had turbo issues. Newer engines, especially the 2L are infamous for chain snapping. It needed three chain guides revisions and still wasn't really solved.
Mercedes has it's own issues with oil leakage. I think all cars have their flaws. It's just better to know them before, avoid them when buying second hand with no warranty and decide if you can afford the flaw - this is what I'm doing math right now for

We all all talking different Mercedes, BMW and VW 6 cylinder diesels here. You are going to have to go elsewhere with 4 cylinder diesels. Not enough history in the US.

That is more oil loss than I had when I had my oil leaks (both times). My leaks were never enough to register on the MFD oil gauge, but my point was it should not leak so I took it in for service/fix.

With my replaced engine, only 30,000 miles on it though, I do not see any oil drop (on the gauge) between 5000 mile oil changes.

May be a good idea to have them take a look at your CD.

Got an update on mine yesterday. A CV boot tore while pulling the motor so that needs to be replaced but, its all back together, boot replaced today, align, then they drive and keep for several drive cycles. Should have it back mid next week.
