CPO 2013 Manual Trans Cayenne Grind into 2nd
Hi All -
Love this forum and have been looking at all of your advice for a while now. Currently have a question regarding a CPO 2013 Cayenne 6spd I bought a month ago. Seems to be a pretty rare breed and can't find too much info on my issue.
After sitting for a while and starting up in the morning (cold), I experience a horrific grind going from 1st to 2nd gear (with the clutch pedal fully depressed). I have had the car for about 1000 miles and only experienced a little stiffness going into 2nd gear in warmer weather. All other gears are perfect. I've driven manuals for a long time and have never experienced something like this.
The previous owner had the cayenne for 49k miles, and the car is immaculate otherwise, no signs of abuse. Could just need a trans fluid flush, or it could be 2nd's synchros - either way, it's disturbing. Have an appt with the dealer in a week, until then I am skip shifting in the cold to 3rd.
Has anyone else with a Manual Cayenne experienced this? Or have any insight into what could cause this?? Thanks, BK

if you double clutch does the symptom stop?
never seen a manual 958 sounds awesome

No problems shifting with a 957 M/T. Not likely that a trans flush will be a solution, sounds like a synchro. Good thing its CPO, I believe the engine and trans must be dropped to service the transmission.

@Spyrex, double clutch seems to alleviate it somewhat, still a little stiff. Definitely rare, I love it- just hope the dealer can fix the issue. The person I spoke with on the phone was sure I was talking about a tiptronic.
@v10rick, thanks for the insight - good to know the 957's were sturdy in that regard. Gut absolutely says synchro - have a trusted friend (tracks M/T cars) test it out in the cold- he ground it just as I had.
Will be interesting to see if it is indeed a synchro - have heard it's $$. I'm expecting some push back from the dealer.

It most likely is a synchro if a double clutch alleviates the issue. Good to drop the fluid, see what comes out and what's on the drain plug. You might do well searching piston heads or other Euro forums to see if this is common... i'm going to guess they had a few more manuals there than here.
Unfortunately opening a tranny is never inexpensive, pulling them on a 911 is about a 2-3 hour job, I have to imagine its substantially more complicated on a cayenne.

Update from the Dealer - Transmission is going to be fully replaced, no questions asked, covered under the CPO.. I am pleasantly surprised how painless that was.
Boy, I am happy I went for a CPO. I'm sure it will be costly.

The CPO paid for itself with this one repair. Cannot imagine what a rebuilt trans plus labor would cost.

You should also get a good extended warranty with that new transmission. Or at least ask, and have it put on the work order. It's nice not to have to fight tooth and nail every single time.

@v10rick - Agreed, a couple times over. I almost pulled the trigger on a 2008 GTS with the stick (I think like yours?). It was incredible, I just couldn't stomach the uncertainty that came with it.
@Big Smoke - Good point - Heading to the dealer tomorrow for a loaner, will ask some more questions. Last I heard, they were awaiting Porsche NA to approve the repair, but indicated it was a formality and it would definitely be covered.

Just to close this one out - Transmission was shipped from Germany and fully covered through CPO. If it was not under warranty, It would have been 10,400 or more to replace. Shifts are smooth and the transmission feels incredibly solid now.
As for the dealer - Stevenson Imports in Denver was a class act - I would definitely recommend to anyone here in the area.

Thanks for the update!
That is a crazy price for a transmission swap but who cares if it's covered by the CPO.
I will be extra careful while shifting, from now on.
