Hello,
Which would you say is the most reliable out of these 3 post 2015 cars.
4.2S Diesel
3.0 Diesel
Plug in Hybrid

I think most of us here a US based, with that being said I would get the big diesel as it was not offered here.

Got the 4.2s Diesel, here Down Under, absolute beast of an engine. Can't believe you yanks went offered if, considering the tanks you get to drive up there. Definitely missed out big time.

how do you find the transfer box, I read they fail regularly.
Along with Nox sensors etc.

Diesels (I understand) have a different transfer box.

That's the 3 liter. We don't have much (any?) data on the V8. Sadly.

Yes its a different t-case from the petrol models, bullet proof and simple torsen. We sold our Cayenne diesel with 190k and it had no issues (just changed fluid every 50k). He has 3 cayenne diesels all in the 200k mile range with all original running components.

wow that is amazing, did you replace the transfer box and transmission oils.

Also what should I look out for when buying a 2015 plus 3.0d, I heard they are prone to oil leaks.

PS in the UK I do hear a lot about failed TB's on the 4.2s perhaps they fail more due to the torque?

Did lots of homework on this, and can confirm that yes the diesel and plug-in hybrid models have the more durable transfer case. They even use 75w90 gear oil, which I find also more reassuring to me, compared to the transfer case oil required in the other models, which I believe is a bit thinner.

.1 seems anecdotally more prone to leaks.

Just had my .2 with 158k miles up on lift 3 days ago. All good.

The transfer box on the 4.2D is the same as the V8s so likely to give trouble at some point. As already stated the 3.0D and hybrids have the torsen transfer box which just uses a clever set of gears to direct torque. So my money would be on the 3.0D to be overall the most reliable. You also have the biggest choice in the UK since over 80% of 958s sold here were diesel, although a portion of them will be the 4.2s.

A Porsche tech friend here at the local dealership says the e-Hybrids have more issues from what he's seen. I'd imagine in the UK the 3.0TDI will be more reliable than the 4.2TDI just being a more common engine and generating less heat. It seems that the earliest .1s had the most leaks, some people will argue that the problems are limited to up to 2013, others cite issues with their 2014s... and more searches will find 3.0TDI leak stories on 958.2s ('15-16 here in the US.) I think it will come down to a mix of service history and usage. A lot of these diesel got saddled with a lot of short trip usage (school/shopping runs, heavy traffic crawling, short highway trips under 11 miles) that contribute to them never really getting run-in properly. The stories from owners that have BIG mileages anecdotally suggest that the TDIs need lots of highway mileage, and owners who aren't afraid to use sport mode and actually drive it like a Porsche. The eHybrid is probably going to be somewhat more reliable for a driver who never goes more than 11 miles on a given trip.
