Not a great way to start the day

Best of luck getting all fixed - both you and your car. On the other issue - you would be crazy to hand any $75k car to a teenager, much less one with that level of acceleration. He’ll be the dude on the other end of a crash like this in no time. Doesn’t matter if money isn’t an issue and you can afford it - it’s a terrible idea.
I took a test drive yesterday in Rivian and it's really quite nice. I'm going to rent one via Turo for this weekend. Supposedly Enterprise now has the SUV variant available. It might be interesting to get one for our Vermont road trip next month.

Thanks, and excellent points. I'm sure a lot of us have had different experiences regarding their first vehicles. I certainly didn't have anything "handed to me". We're fortunate enough to be able to provide something for him, and not interested in going overboard about it. It was my wife that threw in the suggestion about a pickup truck. I think it's not a realistic option (as a first vehicle), but we all know how things often go regarding such debates. Entertain the idea long enough to let the obvious downsides kill it. My thought has been something like a used Chevy Bolt. Just enough to get around without being a "lame" choice for him.

Most kids these days, are in no hurry to drive. Heck, why should they when they have everything, they think they need, at their fingertips. That's what worries me is that they will be on their phone while driving. That's why my son's first car will be a manual transmission

Not great news. Initial disassembly by the shop has their estimate creeping toward $40k.
That and repair expected to take at least 3 months due to parts availability (and lack thereof).

And now we're at $47k and the shop does not think it's worth doing, as add-ons will likely push it even higher. So it's looking like a total loss write-off.
My token reminder piece from it:

@wkearney99 , I'm sorry to hear about your accident. I noticed your location (seems we share a home town). If you need any suggestions: I had the joy of having negotiated a total loss with GEICO last year after a 55mph head-on collision in our X5 diesel (and was able to get their final number up almost 70% from the first offer), and--unfortunately--it looks like we are about to negotiate another total loss with them on the Cayenne Diesel (w/ PASM+Air) after our recent storms (when a County-owned tree fell on it). This would be boring as heck for anyone else, but you may find this thread useful: https://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1930303
If you plan to negotiate for yourself, definitely familiarize yourself with MD COMAR regarding settlements & total loss: http://mdrules.elaws.us/comar/31.15.12 (but don't let on that you know the rules until/unless needed). Remember to stay brutally calm, patient, and observant during any calls (as with any negotiation), recording all conversations with detailed notes & quotations in case they are needed.
Feel free to PM me if useful. Glad you walked away. These cars are amazing when they're in one piece, but almost just as amazing at sacrificing themselves to protect the occupants. Been there on the accident front & right there with you on the negotiation front, ~FR

OP - could be a lot worse, time to go shopping.

Looking back on the thread, you can probably skip straight to page two where the post-negotiation summary was posted. I believe I still have all of the formatting we used to decline their offer, create our own valuations, etc, so hopefully these come in handy the second time around.
Not to thread jack, but just in case misery really does love company, OP. @TRINITONY is correct; stuff got ugly northwest of DC last weekend. Pretty sure our Cayenne made a few news channels as—between our car and the tarps we were putting up on our neighbors homes—their choppers seemed to enjoy hovering overhead…

Since my '17 was totaled I've been shopping. Turo makes for fun rentals.
Absolutely, completely impractical as an alternative to a Cayenne... but a fun drive nonetheless.
I miss my Porsche.

Glad you’re at least making the most of your time looking for the new baby & sorry you’re left missing the old one! Definitely know how that is.
I’m still in casual search mode even though we found a for-now replacement. Let us know your replacement requirements and maybe we can help you find that new dream Cayenne sooner!
