Talking 958 Tire Thread

Hey guys, I wanted to see about trying to get a thread going specifically focused on tires ONLY. Well, we can include wheels as they're obviously related!

I'm a new Cayenne Turbo 958.1 owner, despite the 957 in my name (need to find some admin to help me change it). First-time Porsche owner, period. Super excited to dive into future mods etc. But I bought it with what looks to be some nice aftermarket wheels. And it has snow tires. That's fine for here in Colorado, I want to keep them, but I need to start thinking about a new set of tires for the upcoming summer weather. Ideally, I'd prefer to have an entire set of wheels & tires for each season. Sometimes that's not an option for me, but I at least will keep a set of winters in the garage over the summer and swap them out when we get past Halloween.

I don't know how serious other Cayenne owners are about all-out performance. At least compared to the other Porsche vehicles lol. On other platforms/vehicles I've owned and sooped up over the years, there are a few quality tires I shoot for. Namely, something like the Pilot Sport A/S series from Michelin. Or even the DWS series from Continental. That's for ALL-SEASON general performance, which is usually enough for me here in Colorado with light snow and rain that might fall outside of a traditional "winter" storm with snow and freezing temps that I really want something like what I have already right now, the Bridgestone Blizzaks. Or the Michelin X-Ice is great too.

So, what are some great wheels/tires combos are you running? I'd like to get a list specific to tire sizes as well as wheel dimensions. If money was no obstacle, I'd want the lightest possible wheel. It seems like TireRack is the only place that displays the wheel/rim WEIGHT. Either not available or harder to find through Big O Tires or DiscountTire etc. Right now, I'm running 20" rims, unknown exact width. My current setup looks like the wheels might be able to accommodate a wider tire size, but I'm not sure. Ideally, I'd also like the widest tire possible without rubbing. Has anyone successfully run 10" wide wheels on any Cayenne without rubbing or fitment issues?

Obviously, with larger and wider wheels, the weight is increased. What I've been wondering though is how the wheel + tire combination total weight is. For instance, a 19" wheel is going to use a "larger" tire than the 20" wheel, ya know, maybe more rubber goes on the 19" wheel in aggregate. But I don't know how much weight the rubber adds. I imagine rubber weighs less than the metal wheel.... but still..... I'm happy to go down to a 19" wheel if it helps in finding better tires. Pics of my whip currently for reference:

I'm running the OEM 21" x 10 Turbo II wheels. Square setup with a 50mm offset. I also have 17mm spacers in the rear installed at the factory giving a perfect flush fitment. No rubbing, no issues with Conti DWS 295/35-21

I’m also in Colorado, Summit County to be exact. I run 21” turbo II wheels with Michelin pilot sport as3 295/35/21 in the summer, and am currently running Michelin x ice in the winter 255/55/18. Will probably go to nokian winter tires when the Michelins wear out.

Dang, where you guys getting these 10" Turbo II wheels? Is that from some Turbo model I'm unaware of? I'm super glad to know I can run a 10" wide wheel/tire without any problems. I'm slightly concerned about the added weight though, I don't want to be running a 40-50lb wheel on each corner lol.

Flygts - that's cool, I'm from Eagle County originally. I know you get more snow than we do down in Denver, but still. Sounds like you have two separate sets of wheels & tires you can easily swap out yourself if you wanted each season, no?

gonzoe11 - How do you like the wheel spacers? I'm usually wary of those on any vehicle. Not sure how I feel about them in general. Did you need longer wheel studs I assume? Also I'd be concerned about messing with the stock arrangement by pushing the rears out wider than the fronts???

Right now I'm trying to decide between running another 275/45/20 all season or summer tire on these wheels that the prior owner put on... or see if I can squeeze a 285/45/20 on them. Stopped at Big O Tires today and confirmed that would work. Except for the 285s in the Michelin Pilot AS, it's like $450 per tire. Yikes.

Dang.

I'm trying to figure out the dimensions of these nice "Savini" wheels put on by the prior owner. I just contacted them, so we'll see. They look FARRRRR from being "el cheapo" wheels by any means. At least looking at their website. Austrian made, look like lots of Porsche/Ferrari etc guys use them. Would just like to know if they're the 10" version, which I doubt #widerisbetter

It may have the dimensions stamped on the inside, perhaps even visible near the hub without removing it. Both of my sets do. Standard sizes are:

275/45 R20 110Y XL Wheel: 9 J x 20, RO 57
295/35 R21 107Y XL Wheel: 10 J x 21, RO 50

i really like the flush look of the rears. No issues with these spacers, they were optioned on the original build and were installed at the factory. I believe these are DRA spacers so all bolts are the same length. Porsche has a staggered wheel option on these Cayennes which is different than the Quattro vehicles I used to run.

I'm also a new 958.2 CTT owner. (adding to my stable of my current stage 2 991.2 TTS, Dinan S3R E46 M3, and... Mk7 GTi ) I've had X5Ms before and love the beefy wheel/tire look on SUVs - the last had 315/22s... I realize with the transfer case concern, tire diameters have to be mostly in spec, front to rear, and currently, my CTT has the 20" RS Spyder wheels (square) - so I know 21s are OEM with 295/35/21 sizes... but what are vetted sizes if going to 22s or even staggered setups? (I know the flat6 guys run 22 Vorsteiners on their shop CTT - which looks right IMO)

FYI, just confirming that 275/45R21 fit on my CS with air - and no rubbing - on factory 21" wheels. Even on lower ride height settings.

Factory 21"s? Can you elaborate on what you mean by "comfort"? Just curious. I thought maybe the "less" tire you have... the lower profile... you feel bumps more... no?

Dude right on thanks, I will check those! I contacted SAVINI wheels and they were zero help. They just said they don't make my wheels anymore (duh) and have no idea what sizes they were/are.

I'm with you, I like flush looks too. In general I love the look of wide tires, especially on a Cayenne. More grip! So it sounds like the Cayenne can handle wheel spacers on the rears but not on the front whereas Audi's Quattro system wouldn't like that?

With you 1000% on beefy wide wheels on SUVs. Like the Jeep SRT8 or our Cayennes. Honestly I don't even know of that many other "high performance" SUVs that can even compete. Surely the Jeep wins in a straight line but I don't see any Jeep SRT8s at the 'Ring lol. Are you 20" Spyder wheels aftermarket? I assume so.

Sweet, thanks for the input for this thread! How wide are your wheels though? I really want to go wider than 275 lol. I checked some "tire size calculators" on google and if I switched from a 275/45/20 I have now to a 285/45/20 the speedo diff would be negligible.

My car was ordered with the RS Spyder wheel option. IMO, the wheels look good, but not the size - looks small, and bit too much gap. I think the X5Ms get the crown for beefy wheel/tiresets... as some stock options are 22s with 315 width tires. Heck, way back, before the X5M was introduced, the precursor model was the 4.8is - which came stock with 20" wheels with 315 wide tires; when I bought it I parked it next to my C6 Z06 with 345s and the X5 looked just as meaty. I think I'm going to find OEM 21s for my CTT and maybe go 295/35/21 square - I think this is the sport OEM option; but the 22 Vorsteiners on the flat6 shop 958 - looks right - fills the wells nicely. I do not know the tire size they put on.

Damn, that sounds sweet. Care to upload some photos for me and everyone to feast our eyes upon? Actually I should have prefaced this thread with: LET'S SEE EVERYONE'S WHEELS AND TIRES SETUP!!!!

Here's the 958.2 CTT with the factory option RS Spyder wheels.

This is actually the car - dealer glamour shot.
