Default Door lock actuator replacement

My drivers door is not locking 50% of the time, and therefore the alarm does not activate (no double chirp). Had the car a week and she could not unlock the door to get in, she wasn't impressed.

My Autel says its an issue with the door lock actuator. Does this mean replacement 100% of the time? I did a search.....very little info on this issue.

Doesn't look like a fun job, door panel off, then window assembly. A new part is about $185 on parts geek. Is this a common issue with the Cayenne (2011)?

Not sure how common this is, but recently had to replace the passenger rear door lock actuator on my 2011 S (wouldn't lock at all). Wasn't confident in my ability to take off door panels without breaking something (especially since my panels have the auto sunshades), so paid my indy ~$400 parts and labor and now everything works as it should.

Man, for $400 I'd have it done at the indy!!

Had my rear driver's side done under warranty ('15 diesel). Probably could have just been cleaned, but the policy is to replace the lock mechanism.

Have a '14 that hasn't had any issues with the locks. For what that's worth.

I replaced the actuator on my right rear door a few years ago and used AllDataDIY.com as a starting point along with a YouTube video on panel removal. While it seems a bit daunting it's not that hard to do if you take your time. That said, if I was paying $185 for the part and the indy was going to do it for $400 including a new part I would probably go that route to avoid the stress!

I tend to the frugal side and paid like $40 for a used actuator off a pretty new car so saved a ton over having the dealer do it.

I've removed the rear door panel also. For $215 labor, I'd be all over that. It's not easy to get that panel off and back on. Labor intensive. $215 is a deal.

I had the rear passenger door actuator failure about 18 months ago. From what I can tell searching at the time and watching the forums, it's a sneakily common failure. I took a look at the work required and turned to the indy shop to do it.

From what the owner told me, they ended up sinking a bunch of hours into it. The standard rate wasn't all that high so I think they took a bath on that specific project. Would not recommend you try it yourself.

If you need a write up, I can send ya one as I did it not too long ago. I'd rather install new air suspension in the car than do this again.

I'm still digesting this task.....good news is that I locked the door just 5 minutes ago and heard the "chirp chirp". Perhaps I'll wait a bit........but thanks Ed!

FYI, this was for the drivers front door.

I understand but I think the rear driver's side door will be very similar. Let me know.

If one is mechanically inclined and can follow directions then it's certainly a DIY task. It looks a lot more scary than it is but it does take the right tools to do part of the job with the door handle. I improvised but that bit took me 20 minutes to get the handle back together. The entire job took about 4 hours as the panel really didn't want to come off and so I did a lot of searching to make sure I hadn't missed something.

The drivers side rear failed on mine approximately six months ago. Luckily I was still under my extended warranty. I wonder if this is a bigger problem rather than an isolated one. Hmmmm?

It does seem a common failure point - right/rear passenger door latch assembly. I forget what mine cost at an independent - but something like $800 comes to mind.. Oh well - new one should last to 200,000 miles now.

Spoke too soon. The rear passenger side door quit on the '14 yesterday. Going in on the 14th - last day of warranty! - for repair.
