Default Oil Temp

Hey! Been driving for about 30 min on the highway. Not too terribly cold outside. Engine oil temp seems a little low. Anything to be worried about. Normally hits 208-210 under typical operating conditions. Coolant temp seems low too

Ok. Update. Turned sport mode off and oil temp slowly but surely increased! Guess sport mode turns on some addl cooling?

That's strange

there is no difference in oil temperature between sport and non sport.

my S runs 200ish on coolant, 206 to 210 on oil, under almost all occasions

it's also 44 degrees wehre your'e at and that can have a nice cooling effect on your oil.

Same behavior in some city driving. Anyone else want to take a look at theirs? Would be interesting to see.

On the Carrera and Cayman/Boxter, the Sport mode will drop the temperature to 194 degrees.
To have optimal cooling.
The ECU may also do it for the Cayenne.

Sport mode OFF. Highway driving will see temperatures rise 220-230.
For fuel efficiency.

You are all good.

My '11 Turbo is now living in the driveway.. it's space in the garage seems to be occupied by a Boxster.

The other morning I went to go somewhere in the turbo, and even after driving 20 minutes or so including 15 minutes of highway (70-80) - the needle JUST started coming off the peg as I arrived at my destination (a Porsche shop actually..) It had been below freezing the night before, 28F and I guess it just took that long to warm up 10 quarts of oil to where the gauge would show any temperature.

I think I've got to start alternating the two in the garage, bit of a PITA shuffling them around though.

True story.

On those cars, too, the voltage is also different between sport and non-sport. I suspect the slight change in voltage has a very small positive effect on performance due to slightly higher ignition energy. The temp change probably allows for more controller and consistent power by eliminating some potential for retardation of ignition timing while driving spiritedly and on the track.

Interesting. I'm going to test this on my Cayenne. Wondering if a GT3 is the same.

I've noticed something about my oil temp when driving that is probably related. I drive a freeway interchange where two ramps merge together into a large 5 lane highway that is up hill and not very crowded when I drive on it. Traffic backs up in the right two lanes at the merge so I usually squirt out to the left lane by pushing on the pedal to the right - nothing crazy or reckless but dropping a couple gears and approaching 4k shift points. My oil temp drops about 10* - 15* over the next 15 to 20 seconds and then creeps back up over the following minute or two when I return to calm cruising.

It sounds like there is an electronically actuated thermostat on the oil cooler system and when the computer thinks the car is going to be under heavy load either with throttle inputs or keying sport mode, it opens the gates and cools the oil more in anticipation of a higher overall thermal load on the way. Interestingly, the water temp never moves off 201*.

If you are driving gently and not in sport mode and your oil isn't getting over 210* on freeway driving, your oil thermostat might be malfunctioning. I'm sure that would throw a code if it was bad enough (thermostats can fail partially open and still function somewhat) or happened long enough but even if it doesn't, oil that is too cold is a bad thing. It has to get hot enough to boil out condensation or it will start to break down prematurely.

The oil temp change on my '12 Cayenne S has always behaved on the following conditions:
non-Sport : 210 F regular driving but if you rev it to like 5000 rpm or so for a bit it will drop to 200 F immediately and creep back up to 210 F on regular driving
Sport mode: 196 F or so all day

My take on this is that there is some reserved cool oil that is being used when needed for spirited driving.

991 GT3/RS is steady around 194 F but gets to 230 F on the track even if you track it all day.
