So I just noticed a gouge in my tire sidewall. Haven't seen this before and I don't know how bad it is. I was looking back through my photos I took when test driving and I can see now that it was there before I bought it (used). 1) how bad is this? 2) is it repairable?
If you have documentation it was there prior to the purchase I'd see if the seller would at least help out some if not outright replace it since it looks to be brand new in the photo.
You can see by the crescent-shaped mark on the rim someone hit a square edge at some speed causing the sidewall to fold up, and that caused the visible split. Thing is - the inside of the tire could have similar damage and the cords of the tire may have been compromised by that hit.
Replacement is tough since you want to keep all 4 tires close to the same rolling diameter. I believe Tirerack offers "shaving" where they remove the desired amount of tread on a tire to make it match the diameter of the other tires on the vehicle.

I'd consider buying a good used tire with similar tread to your current one. Why pay full boat retail, plus another $25 bux for them to wear off tread for you when you could pay 30% of the cost of a new tire for a good used one.
Update your profile to add a location, someone nearby might be able to suggest a good tire place that could handle replacing it with one shaved to the right diameter.
That and check the alignment. Hits like that often bend more than just a rim.

Thanks. Just did. I'm in the Chicago area (just West of the City).
So, the options I'm seeing here are:
1. Replace the axle pair with new (most expensive)
2. Replace the damaged one with new that is shaved down to the right tread depth (not as expensive)
3. Replace the damaged one with a used tire (least expensive)
Is there a reason not to go with option 3? I just bought into the cayenne and with over 50% tread on all tires wasn't expecting a replacement this soon. Also, I just verified that these are the Pirelli Scorpion Verde plus tires, not the N0 ones for Porsche. Anyone with additional experience with these particular tires?
I'm running the Scorpion Verde Plus and am happy with them on my DD. They're not the best in snow/ice but get by and make a bit of noise if pushed in corners but they last a heck of a lot longer than the N0 equivalent. Not a performance tire but I'd buy again as they fit my usage.
