My 13 GTS is not a DD but it gets driven 3-4 times a week.

last year was the first year of ownership so we drove it a lot.. found every excuse to take it out.. we took 5 family trips and it was driven pretty hard as well (wife has a lead foot), I remember hitting 122 on the way to Savanah with entire family in car and trunk full to the brim
I made the "mistake" of following Porsche ridiculous 10K mile oil change schedule for our first change, basically life happened and I went longer between oil changes than I ever have (9400 miles). I ended up adding 1.3 qts of oil during that period. Majority of the "usage" came between 6000-9400 miles. Up to the first 5000 miles I barely saw any drop in oil
Current oil has a little over 3000 miles, we have not taken any trips and the car has not been driven hard under load, and the oil dip stick shows exactly the same amount of oil as the day of oil change

Summary and lesson learned, for me.. is that I will nto be going more than 5000-6000 miles between oil changes

As the oil ages in your motor, it suffers fuel dilution and the flashpoint is lowered, hence oil burning and having to add. As Desmotesta said, change that oil often. I stick by my old school 3,000 OCI's in every car and do a 2,500 in the Audi RS4 and the 997 GT3.

 

Apart from mileage between oil change another variable is more oil consumption if you engage in spirited driving or a track junkie.

 

And yet another variable is the brand/viscosity of the oil. Has that changed?

 

Some thoughts:

1. Some oil use is normal. All engines do that. People often see no oil use or even increase in the volume of oil in the engine because of dilution of oil by fuel when engine runs cold a lot. And then you let the engine warm up a bit more and the fuel evaporates, which looks like a big drop in the level at the time. Also, oil use grows exponentially at higher revs, but it's not bad for the engine or means that the engine wear is accelerated by the same degree - it's just how oil works.
2. Many oil manufacturers, especially those tightly working with car manufacturers, have recently updated their formulas for newer engine designs and metallurgy, which work better with thinner oils. In many cases even the same marking is now somewhat thinner (e.g., Mobil 0w40 is much thinner in the latest version). Those oils still provide enough protection because lower viscosity is compensated for by better stability and stronger oil film, but oil may burn out a bit more in some engines.
3. Oil change is a bit of a religion in the USA, so I'll have my flame suit on for this. But changing oil every 3K miles is totally unnecessary (for a Porsche-endorsed synthetic oil), wasteful and bad for the environment. Both the engine and oil are designed so that the oil would last as much as manufacturer specifies with a good cushion built in. Outside of the USA & Canada, almost no one changes oil more frequently than manufacturers recommend and everything is fine. Maybe this has something to do with all those Jiffy Lube ads on TV for decades :-). The 3K oil change is an arbitrary number that's completely made up. Oil change interval is different for every engine. In fact, an engine manufacturer can double the oil change interval by just increasing the amount of oil in the engine by 2x (it will take 2x amount of use to break down 2x volume of additives in the oil). And that's what many manufacturers, particularly Euro, did - just look at how much oil goes into Cayenne or even a small 2 liter BMW 3 series engine. No need to believe me - just do oil analysis. Usually, if the oil does not last the recommended interval with all parameters being within a recommended range is only because the engine is broken in some way.
4. Big change in il use without change in driving pattern or oil type is usually bad news. BUT increase in oil use due to a different type of oil or different driving pattern is not a bad thing and does not usually mean that the oil or driving style are bad for the engine (although it looks "guilty by association").

 

None of my cars used any appreciable oil with 5000 mile interval oil changes BUT my old 955 Turbo. It consistently went through 1 qt every 1200 miles and that increased to 1 quart every 600 miles before I traded it in for my CD.

My CD uses no oil. So while some oil use is normal, you do need to monitor it...

 

 

 

Mine has 64K now.. we drive it very sparingly now.. Wife works 75% from home

I did it at around 5:30 in the morning on an open empty stretch of 95 south near savannah. Everyone else in the car was asleep. I was surprised by how quickly it got to 120-ish.. 5 people, truck full to the brim..
Straigh line speed isnt my thing at all, I sped up to pass a truck and looked down and I was at 103 already, figured what the hell.. I could have kept going, but decided to slow down..

it feels strange to do such speeds on American roads, I was doing more than that on German roads with all family and car loaded to the brim, somehow it didnt feel unsafe when everyone else was doing 110+ ..lol

 

I run any one of the threes Motul oils in my Cayenne Turbo.
1. Motul X Clean 5/40
2. Motul X Cess 5/40 - usually when I have extra, I'll use this but keep it in stock for an RS4 and GT3.
2. Motul, X Max - Only used this once as my shop had it in stock.

I used to run Mobil 0/40 in a 2000 Nissan Maxima. Sold the car to a friend and it's still running great, not burning oil and has well over 200k on the clock.



don't notice any difference between the three and they all empty out the same amount as I'm putting in.

 

Anyone with 100k plus mileage experiencing excessive oil consumption. My GTS burns about a quarter every 388 miles, just as listed in the owner’s manual.

 

Another possible thing is a blown AOS (air-oil separator) but if that's the problem, the car will show constant usage, regardless of the mileage on the oil.

 

when you do a DIY oil change on the CD, what do you use use?

this appears to be one option? (I am assuming there are others...)
