Default Cross shopping Macan S ?

Thinking about the Macan S now versus the Cayenne. I fear is owning a 12 Cayenne out of warranty and wondering if I need a vehicle THAT big.

My BMW lease is coming to an end and I'm thinking I am going to need an SUV. I live in the Northeast with snow, and while my xdrive BMW's have been great I have a daughter now and she doesn't fit so well in the back of my 3 series. My wife has an SUV, but we trade day care duties and sometimes I have to pick her up at night.

I was also cross shopping the 12-13 Cayenne S, as it's a bit cheaper but I don't know if I need that big of an SUV.

I work in Real Estate Sales and the Macan seems like a nice sized sport SUV that could haul around some stuff.

I noticed finding one in decent shape with a CPO under $45k is very hard. The Cayenne is much easier to find.

Any thoughts? I was also shopping the SQ5 Audi but don't love how they look although the tech is very good in them.

Wondering if I should maybe look at older Panameras possibly. I've had BMW's for four years and it's time for a change. I do not like MB.

It sounds like you are just starting your search and are casting a wide net so nobody is really going to be able to help you at this point, but here are my 2c.

I just picked up a Cayenne and am happy with the size. It is a midsize SUV where the Macan would be a small SUV. The Macan drives better but it just isn't practical enough for me. Also have you sat in the backseat of a Macan? It's tight with probably about as much room as the back seat of a 3 series. Also consider the amount of cargo space you will lose in the Macan with the slanted rear roof. If you already have an SUV for hauling stuff then the Macan might be perfect for you. You are right about the Tech in the new Audi's being superior to just about anything on the road but they don't drive as well as a Porsche and that was the deal clincher for me.

Mike thanks for your reply.

I know the net is wide, so I apologize. Trying to figure out my next DD is a pain but I want to enjoy it since I'm buying not leasing this time around.

We have another SUV but it's of similar size. Dad has a truck if I really need a truck.

Recently had a base Mecan as a loaner. Really liked how it drove and the power with the base engine was good, but not thrilling. Front seat comfort was excellent. The backseat was another story. You would not want to put tall kids or adults back there. Cargo space was ok for a few small pieces of luggage.
After returning to my Cayenne Diesel, I noted how much more substantial the Cayenne felt. I'd look into a base Cayenne with your family needs.
One last note, we've taken multiple long trips with the Cayenne, with our two college age kids. It has also served to haul dorm contents on several occasions. I wish the Cayenne had slightly more cargo space, but we've been able to make it work on every trip. The Cayenne is an amazing ultra-long distance cruiser.

If you ever have to drive around with clients then you better go Cayenne unless you want to lose a sale after folding them origami style into the back of a Macan. The packaging just seems way too small unless you are by yourself 99% of the time.

I just did the same exact thing as you and went with a 2014 Cayenne GTS over a new Macan. In my opinion it is way more comfortable and practical.

Best of luck!

Agree with leftlane.

The Macan is a great driving car. But it's size is no bigger inside than my wife's 4-door VW GTI. You CAN fit (er, STUFF) 4 adults in it but it won't be pretty.

I think you'd be fine for car seats and even medium-sized kids (my 12 y/o is big for his age group and he still fits fine) but I don't know if I'd want to take clients in one.

For the client reason alone, I'd be looking at Cayennes.

Agreed that the Macan is too small. You would be better off with a 5 or 7 series if you need to drive adults around. Similar to the 958, but even more extreme, the back hatch really cuts down on what you can fit in the back.

Did you look into the Audi SQ5? In my opinion it's much more fun than the Macan S. It has the same engine except it's supercharged, so no turbo lag like in the Macan S. I test drove the Macan S and found it slightly boring. The SQ5 sounds much better, more impressive than the Macan S.

The Audi is almost as spacious as the Cayenne, yet one inch shorter than the Macan.

That thing is awesome looking.

I'd drive one.

I had a old (well, er, current?) bodystyle Panamera-4 for almost 2 weeks as a loaner waiting to take delivery of my CD.

Ugly car. But man I *really* enjoyed driving it.
