Default Questions for 957 Turbo Experts - Blankets good or bad?

For the turbo experts, I was considering installing some Ti Turbo Blankets on my '09 CTTS. Are these beneficial? I thought by trapping the heat, my HHR intake might ingest cooler air and it might force more of the heat out the exhaust system, but then I thought, does trapping the heat cause more wear to the bearings or other parts of the turbo assembly itself?

Also, our the turbos a T3 or T4 size so that if I proceed I get the correct size blankets.

Any experience or knowledge you can share is appreciated.

Thanks.

Is the rest of the exhuast like headers, downpipe, wastegate, insulated as well. Usually the idea is to insulate the exhaust system in front of the hot side of the turbo to get as much energy to the turbo as possible. Any heat lost before the turbo is energy lost that could spin it. The other benefit is to reduce under hood temps. The turbo is not the only thing that gets hot.

Thanks for the input. In my case, no it would not be - I was just going to cover the turbos since they're close to the sides and I assumed that the exhaust heat on one side of an assembly where I was trying to compress colder air on the other side might help to isolate the two. Does that mean turbo blankets wouldn't provide much of an advantage for cooler intake air that's being sucked in from the HHR intake from above that area (not using the stock airboxes any longer, or would they not be worth the add?

I wrapped the headers on both my 06 TTS and SO's 08 CTT. Not using blankets on either one and still the underhood tenps went down significantly - checked with OBD readings and it was like 20 degrees celsius lower while driving slowly. I have EVOMS cold air intake on the 06 TTS with custom ram air ducts.
Never checked on the 08.

without getting too deep into thermodynamics and gas laws, I would fully support any means of getting as much control of temps on both sides of the turbo.

on the intake/compression side, cooler is better to maximize mass flow which in turn increases combustion potential.

on the exhaust side, any loss in temp would result in a loss of energy from expansion.

I would be curious to know the temperature limits of the turbos. I would assume they have been designed to hold up. If anything maybe increasing the cooling potential of the oil to the bearings through increased flow rate or greater heat exchanging.

Thanks for all the info so far. So is the turbo on my 957 CTTS a size T3, a T4, or a T3/T4 Hybrid, or which blanket is the proper size to fit it? From what I can find, a a t3/t4 has the turbine of a smaller t3 with the compressor of a bigger t4. I also found these dimensions listed on a website -

T3
Outer circumference: 19”
Inner width: approximately 2-1/2”

T4
Outer circumference: 22”
Inner width: approximately 2-3/4”

Anyone know the answer to the T3 or T4 size question? Thanks.

Neither. They are application specific turbine housings with an on-center inlet. Your CTT uses a td04hl 18t.

Hang on, I found a set of turbos from my wife's 08 CTT today, they are exactly like yours in TTS.

What dimensions do you need? Tell me exactly and I can post them up w/ pics

I was looking for the outer circumference and the inner width so I could put some blankets on them that look like these, but they're offered in what's referred to as a T3 size and as a T4 size. Their dimensions are listed in my earlier post.

Circumference - w/o exhaust inlet - 32cm
Diameter of center bearing - 8.5cm

Tell me if I should measure anything else, I got them in the living room and my wife is thrilled

Hey, what about the circumference around the outside of the curved portion of the turbo impeller housing (the part below the measuring tape in your 2nd photo).

Thanks.
