Default Cayenne Gen 1 & 2 Reverse Camera Faulty

I have searched, honest........I cant find out if there is a plug and play camera for my 2006 CTTS. The original factory one is giving up, I just want to replace like for like but not pay $1500 to Porsche.

I have found many threads where people are replacing or adding more like, a number plate type camera, I really want the lazy way out on this!

Has anyone replaced like for like on a Gen 1 or 2 Cayenne (same part number for both)

TIA

What is actually going wrong with your camera? I was able to take mine apart, clean everything up and get it back working. I did do the A/M route for a while but like keeping everything OEM.

As KM1.8t said, what is the problem with yours? No camera pic or not extending/retracting? Mine would extend/retract but no A/V so I found an Ebay camera that worked (bought two different ones and picked the one that would take the OEM 6v. feed). I uses a few screws and some silicone and fit it in the OEM mount and it's been working fine for at least 3yrs. Might even try and replace it with one of the newer cameras that has more Night Vision capability. Also when I had the unit apart I cleaned and lubricated the extension/retraction mechanism to keep it reliable and to keep strain off the electric motor that runs the little jackscrews.

The camera mount works fine, it comes out and retracts no problem, the picture is sometimes ok, sometimes blank. I will take the panel off and have a clean up. Can you show a link of the sort of camera you managed to get to fit in the OEM mount? I realize it will need some fettling and bodging to get it in!

Mine works perfectly, untill it's been dry for a few days. After this the camera cover will remain slightly open. If it rains, you wash the car, or just pour water on the camera it starts rectracting all fine again. Probably should 'lube' the mechanism somehow? It's as if the camera stays half a fingernails thickness too much out from it's seat, and wont le the cover close.

If you use the OEM power source as mentioned above it is only 6v. I had bought two different Ebay cameras to choose the one with the best picture. Both had great pictures and powered up fine with a 9v battery (at that time I assumed the OEM power was 12v.), but when I tried them in the Cayenne only one worked at the actual supplied voltage of 6v. so that is the one I went with. One camera was $20, the other $25 plus an RCA to Fakra adapter so all total it was well less than $100. As I mentioned above, I might even try a newer camera with the Night Vision capability when I find the time.

I can't for the life of me fathom why Porsche/VW made this SO complex.. a retracting camera. Happily the 958 series went with the rest of the world and used a fixed position camera (which works amazingly well in the dark..)

Interesting you says its 6 volts, none of the cameras I could see on ebay had a voltage listed, I would expect them all to be 12 volts. The complete Porsche unit does have a sticker on it that says 12 volts but that may be directed at the motor, anyhow I would expect to be able to pick up 12 volts from the motor feed if the camera feed is indeed only 6 volts and doesnt work an aftermarket camera

I have so far spent $25 on camera, lead and plug.

OK, on further investigation it looks like cameras are indeed 12 volts but some work on 12v + or - 2v some 12v + or - 6v. I think that explains why one worked and one didnt!

I personally think the retractable camera is a good idea for keeping the lens clean, but also extremely over priced and over engineered like the rest of the car. Someone will easily come out with an aftermarket Cayenne specific one for 1/2 the price as the demand for these goes up.

I also think it's way over-engineered fir the sole purpose of keepng the lense clean. The angle is also not the greatest.

It would be amazing of someone could make a stationary camera with the shape of the original camera cover - that you cold install in place of the old camera.

The camera angle issue is partially due to the OEM head-unit cropping the image. I was pleasantly surprised how much wider and taller it looks on the new screen:

The cameras gets it's power separately from the motor in the 955's. There is a camera switching module which is in the lower portion of the rear hatch, you can pull the carpet from there to find it, good thing is the dealer said they've never sold a replacement before so the module must last, too bad the whole camera w/extension/retraction system doesn't.

I had the same issue, it was the wire that goes in to the camera, turn ignition on put in reverse while not running, reach in and wiggle the wire while watching the screen, if it goes in and off its the wire. I wasn't successful at fixing it after taking it all apart it worked for a little while then went black. The wire moves in and out each time the camera moves. I found a used one in ebay for $225 and it works perfectly.
