Default High Mileage 955 Reliability

As I mentioned in the thread about the panorama roof, we're looking at yet another 955 Turbo or TTS purchase. This one unfortunately would be getting massive miles, up to 20k a year. What's the word on extreme high mileage 1st gen Turbo's? I've seen a few listed here and there with 150k miles or so. Anyone seen higher? I'm intimately familiar with the milestone issues, drive shaft, brakes, coils, etc. What's the word on extreme mileage issues though? Do the turbos go at a predictable point? Transmission? What?

I do 20k - 25k miles per year on mine. One simply hits the milestone problems in rapid succession. There is a very valid reason they depreciated so quickly. If you have access to another vehicle while you wait for parts to arrive/have time to put them in, it isn't so bad. If you plan on having the dealership take care of you, this is NOT an acceptable high-mileage, out-of-warranty daily runner.

On the flip side, there are a LOT worse places to sit for 20k+ miles per year, although you may want to update the PCM.

Just stay on top of the preventative maintenance, and you'll be fine.

Center support bearing on the drive shaft
Coolant pipes

Beyond that, regular maintenance and consumables. The cayenne is a very reliable car. I would suggest that you learn how to DIY if you haven't already though.

Being realistic, buying any ten yr old car having 100K+ miles on it, and expecting to put 20K more on per year is a risky proposition. Doing it with a high repair/maintenance cost car like a CTT is obviously considerably higher risk to the budget.

FWIW I'm at about 107K miles, just had the coolant pipes go, and the dealer recommended service was nearly $13K which included a bunch of other items (I had the same dealer do a major refresh of all sorts of things last year for over $5K so not like I was mistreating this pig, though yes we clearly should have made SURE the pipes had been replaced). I'm not saying they aren't reliable or that you would have the same issues but this episode likely means I'm moving on to something else. Great car but if you're going to spend $6k or so a year on maintenance it's cheaper to buy something newer.

If I plan on working on the car and driving another while I'm fixing then it makes sense. I wouldn't buy one of these if I didn't... too expensive at dealer or other mechanic

Porsche parts cost about the same or more then Marine Boat parts. Michelin Tires only last 25,000 miles then you need to replace all four of them at $1,400 on a 19" wheel. Motul Motor Oil cost $120 for 10 Liters every 5,000 miles. Premium Gas at $3 a gallon when your getting 15 miles to a gallon adds up too. . . But I Love my Porsche and I Enjoy my Boat. Their Worth It.

I would disagree a little on this, I spent 25 years looking after my own cars but now have neither the time or the inclination to do so. Currently, and including all my recent Porsches, my cars are indy serviced. My 955tt did 120k kms in 2 years and never let me down once, nor did it at any time spend more than 3 days at the shop waiting on parts. I sold the car to a friend at work and it is now at 210k kms, it has just had the cardan shaft replaced and is still on the original coolant pipes. There are good cars, bad cars and average cars but in general I think that we see more of the bad cars on forums. If I needed a cheap car to run as a high mileage DD, I would be more than happy to take back that 2005tt and run it for another 110k kms.

The 955tt I'm referring to above did about 25k kms on a set of rears but the fronts would last 50k kms (Michelin Latitude Sport) but i am fairly hard on tyres. You can pay that for Motul and change it at 5000 miles if you want but at that frequency you might as well run a mineral oil. As far as oil is concerned I ran it exclusively on M1 0w40 at the locally recommended 20k km change intervals it uses no more oil today (1l/4k-6k kms) than it did on the day I bought it. It still pulls like a train and has had zero engine related problems.

...and by the way I love this quote from Blackstone's FAQ page:

We just rolled passed 325,000 in our 2004 Cayenne Turbo yesterday, in case you needed another data point.

Do tell us more about this... what has the maintenance been like and how has everything else held up?

Also, what area or climate are you in? 325k is an amazing number.

Thanks,
Bryan

Guys,

I've posted before here with mileage updates. In general the car is daily driven, 3 drivers in the house. It's our everyday grocery getter and work vehicle and weekend run around vehicle.

Maintenance on this one, it's an early 2004 Beta vehicle, delivered in April 2003, has not been too bad. Typical coolant tubes, one computer for the air suspension, alternator, one radiator, one secondary air motor, gaskets, seals, etc for minor oil leaks. It does receive regular maintenance. I have a CEL code that leads to an O2 sensor that needs attention, radio will not fire up and the air suspension works fine but also throws a code, believe the compressor needs to be replaced.

I would not classify this car as a show car by any stretch of the imagination, it's a family car that gets used for hauling kids, horse equipment, etc. We bought it to use it and have done so.

It has left us stranded only 1-2 times - once for air suspension, once for coolant tubes that failed.

We love it, it still runs as strong as day one.

T2 - continues to knock on wood!!
