Default 2nd gear start - 05' CTT

Hi all I just recently picked up a 05' CTT and noticed it always takes off in 2nd gear after stopping at stop signs/lights etc while driving. Is that normal behavior?

Obviously I can manually shift it into 1st if needed but just noticed it usually takes off in 2nd.

Is there a way to activate a 'sport' mode that has more aggressive shift points and uses 1st gear (without having to manually shift)? Or is the sport button only on the newer CTTs?

Turn off PSM and it is much more sporty. It starts in 2nd to save gas.

Ahh okay I will try that. I was thinking PSM just turned the nannies off such as traction/stability control.

Does turning it off do anything else also?

I have a Stick in my Cayenne, and I start in 2nd, first is really low.

I am not absolutely sure, but I believe Porsche is using similar transmission technology Mercedes uses. I know its a Porsche Triptronic, or whatever they call it, but it was normal in standard model Mercedes to have this as a feature, to start from second if not fully stopped of stopped for a short period of time.

This could be normal, or a sign of trouble? I myself toy with the cable adjustment and the shift pressure setting on my 1992 300CE W124, I am not sure if it is that easy on a Porsche.

if you drive aggressively for a short period of time it will start in 1st. Then revert to 2nd once you take off slowly.

It will start in 1st gear, and it will hold the gears longer before upshifting. It will also be reluctant to go into 6th gear, even at highway speed. Obviously it will turn off the electronic stability control, so you should keep that in mind when turning it off.

Read the manual, PSM does much more than one would expect. unless i am autocrossing or on a road course, i don't see a need to turn it off...

In my opinion the Cayenne PSM will only intervene if you are making a real mess of things; generally no reason to turn it off.

If driven sportily the Cayenne (CTT) will adapt throttle, suspension and transmission maps to suit the driving style. Switching the PSM off does this without having to make an effort.

Thanks for the info here. I turned off the PSM and that definitely is equivalent to the sport button in other cars.....exactly what I was looking for. Much more aggressive shift points with PSM off and even used first gear during stops as well. Thanks!

most autos start in second gear and keep first for high acceleration and steep hills

If you push the throttle down aggressively (not even all the way down) from a stop, it will shift down and start in 1st.

Fwiw, my 928S4 also starts in second.

My wife's Cayenne S starts in 2nd unless you push the "Sport" button. Is the 05 CTT different that you have to turn PSM off to start in 1st gear?

It will also start in first gear from a cold start until the trans reaches a certain temp. The manual just say's when starting from cold.

No, it will start in first if you push the throttle quickly...

This has been discussed before. The base V6 (with Tiptronic) and the Diesel start out in 1st by default. "Less horsepower, same mass" was the reason given. V8 models use 2nd gear as default, unless/until over-ridden by an aggressive driver.
