Once the $300 barrier has been bested for a brand new one, I suspect the rebuild prices are going to come down too. These are cheap enough that I might just buy one and put it away in the garage for the day mine fails..

Well, that's good news. We replaced the center bearing support last week on mine and it doesn't seem like it's working out (it's still throwing grease). $300 is better than $400, which is better than whatever Porsche wants for them. However, it would be even nicer if Vertex was charging something reasonable ($100? $150?) for their bolt-in version. $500 is an a$$ rape (no lube)...
