I'm sure this is part of the reason the original heated steering wheels were designed they way they were. Simply to allow the driver to operate without gloves for maximum performance in the cold, not as a luxury feature. Which would explain why it only heats to "room temperature" at 72* and not something warmer that you would feel and perceive as a luxury item.

Hm, interesting... but still, if your steering wheel is too hot to touch, I would assume that'd be dangerous too :P

In ice racing, they have no concerns about exposed flesh?

Probably. Just saying the original system seems only focused at making the wheel "not cold" (so you dont have to wear gloves) vs. the newer system designed to make it "luxuriously warm" on a cold day.(turn on and off as you see fit for comfort)
