Oil filters?

Oil filters?
Where do folks get their CTT oil filters? Local place wanted $37.
They had Beck&Arneys for $17?
Are all of the makers sourced from the same place?
This is true for the 996/Boxster filters -- despite K&N charging 2X.
thanks,
Mike

www.germanfilters.com Same filters for the Cayennes as for the 996 & Boxsters of the same years, makes sense, Porsche was just trying to have some commonality. They are a 996 part #.

Are these cartridges or canisters?
My 928/944 uses a canister -- my 2000 boxster is a cartridge.
I'm confused what I've found on various websites.....
http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,ca...,parttype,5340
99610722553 Mahle-knecht oil-filter insert
NOTE: 911 1998-08, GT2 and GT3, Boxster 2005-09, Cayman 2006-08, Cayenne S/Turbo 2003-09
$10.30

Yes, the 944/968 use the screw-on canister filters, mounted in a ridiculous upside down location, whose bright idea was that. The Boxster, Cayenne, Cayman, 911 all use just the paper element cartridge that on the Cayenne (V8 at least, not sure about the V6 VW motor) goes into the threaded Plastic housing at the front bottom of the engine. Be sure that the plastic housing is not overtighted, it has a fairly low Tq spec, something like 18 lb/ft or 22 lb/ft, can't remember for sure.

The paper element filter cart. started with the Boxster (??) and the 996 flavor of the 911.
I don't think anyone would argue the 993 is the most challenging car to do a basic oil change. Not difficult but a involved procedure and hard to do without making a mess.

Well by 911 I mean the 996 and later models, I have a 993 Turbo so I actually do know better but starting with the 996's and Cayenne's they all went to the paper cartridge. Oh, my 993 Turbo is a pain to do the filter but not as messy as my two 944 Turbos. All 944's & 968's have the filters mounted upside down so it is impossible not to spill almost all of the oil in the filter when removing it, at least on the 911's from '65 to '97 you only loose half of the oil removing the filters from the dry sump oil tanks.

But I do have a '74 911 with the 3.6 out of a '91 964. RS bumpers and interior, full Elephant racing suspension, weights 2280lbs, goes like hell. Now that is a real 911, no heater, no glove box, radio, etc...

FWIW, I buy my filters from Porsche. The reason is that if the filter's bad and ruins an engine, I know Porsche will stand behind it. I think of it as an insurance policy, and they're cheap enough. YMMV, to each his own.

I get my Porsche parts from Porsche, too. Similar reason as what KevinGross has mentioned above.
If you really think of it, it's not that much more, not like they will cost you $1k difference.
Sunset Imports from Oregon state has served me well so far

That's a good point. I've been using Mann Filters in the past on my 2004CT with no issues; have also had good experience with Sunset Imports. With a 2012 C-V6 in the garage, and a CD on the way, I will likely place a bulk order for oil filters for both, along with air / cabin filters -- so I have them when I need them -- at a reasonable price.
