Default Cayenne S Diesel ...the V8 is released!!

from Auto week
By: Greg Kable on 9/11/2012

Porsche has confirmed long-running rumors it will add a Cayenne S diesel variant to boost sales and performance potential in the face of increased luxury SUV competition.

The Cayenne S diesel runs the latest evolution of the Audi 4.2-liter V8 diesel engine, shared through the Volkswagen Group family. It's pictured here for the first time ahead of a world premiere in September at the Paris motor show.

With twin-variable turbochargers and the latest in piezo-valve-guided, common-rail-injection technology, the 90-degree unit kicks out about 377 hp and 626 lb-ft of torque—a substantial increase compared with the existing turbo 3.0-liter V6 engine found in the Cayenne diesel. The S model would slot in as a performance variant above the V6 oil-burner.

According to Porsche's own performance figures, the added reserves are sufficient to haul the all-wheel-drive Cayenne S diesel to 62 mph in 5.7 seconds and to a top speed of 157 mph. They also help extend towing capacity to about 7,716 pounds.

Equipped with various fuel-saving features, including automatic stop/start, the Cayenne S diesel is estimated to achieve the equivalent of 28.3 mpg (U.S.) on the European cycle.

Porsche says it has worked hard to provide the V8 diesel with a distinctive sound, which it likens to its more traditional V8 gasoline units. This engine also is earmarked to join a face-lifted Panamera lineup in 2013.

The strong torque qualities of the big diesel have also led to a different setup for the Cayenne's all-wheel-drive system, with torque vectoring to be offered as optional equipment.

The Cayenne S diesel receives the same styling treatment as other V8-powered Cayenne models, along with diesel badges on the front flanks and S identification on the tailgate.

Porsche is yet to reveal when or if the Cayenne S diesel will arrive for the U.S. market. It is planned to head into German showrooms in January 2013 with a sticker price of 77,684 euros, or slightly less than $100,000.

from The Motor Report

Porsche has introduced a powerful new up-spec Cayenne S Diesel model, entering the Australian range between the S petrol and S Hybrid variants.

Driven by a 4.2 litre twin-turbo eight-cylinder diesel, the Cayenne S Diesel delivers 281kW and 850Nm of torque. By comparison, the regular 3.0 litre six-cylinder Cayenne Diesel offers 176kW and 550Nm.

A 0-100km/h time of 5.7 seconds is promised, with fuel consumption listed at a low 8.3 l/100km. This means that while the new model cuts nearly two seconds from the entry diesel's sprint, fuel use increases by only half a litre.
Porsche says the diesel V8 and its 100 litre fuel tank will give buyers a driving range of around 1200 kilometres between stops.

Matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive, the big diesel offers a 3.5 tonne towing capacity - identical to the Volkswagen Touareg V8 diesel. (Not currently offered in Australia.)

Nice .... Very nice !!!

It is also listed on the German and other Porsche sites, so you can do an apples for apples comparison to the other models.

Faster than the petrol S (as fast as the GTS, yet much cheaper), and should feel more like the turbo with all that "kick in the back" low down torque! Mexico gets it as well, any car smugglers in the house

Now let me get this straight .... It is faster accelerating, higher top speed, gets the better 4WD (driveline), lighter (better handling), and same efficiency as the hybrid ... yet cheaper !

So what exactly is the hybrid business case again ???

Time for them to come up with the rumored plugin Hybrid ... So I can put my cheap Hydro Electricity to good use!

This is an interesting development. 4.2 liter twin turbo diesel! Wonder what mileage it gets on the highway in the real world?

Interesting timing on this. We're just starting to shop to replace my wife's Cayenne S. I have been looking at the diesel, but more interested in a Cayenne S. This might be the perfect car! Hopefully it will come to the US.

Nice!! I traded in my x5d for a new Cayenne S because the Cayenne Diesel was simply too slow. I hope it does come to the US. The diesel M5 will not come to the US either. The US is still not seen as a diesel market.

I thought they would be going for the new Audi 3.0 Biturbo diesel engine. Perhaps 3 diesel models in the line up or make the Biturbo the entry level?

Farkin' a, V8 diesel Cayenne is what I'm talkin' about. I'm in if it happens. Not going for this V6 TDI stuff. Not when I carry a much bigger stick from more than 6 years ago.

BTW, I've posted it in other threads, my 6000lb V10 TDI Touareg can see up to 27 mpg at 70mph.

Since they just finally introduced the cayenne diesel to the US.. That means they still might bring cayenne S diesel but would wait several years. It's amazing what a price premium they put on it since the engine can't add more than a few thousand in actual cost. I guess it would cannibalize a lot of the petrol engines if it was cheaper.

Despite what the article says, the towing capacity does not change from the V6 diesel to the V8 diesel. It remains the same at a chassis limited 7716 lbs.

I don't understand the rational for a hybrid Porsche. Put a diesel engine in there and you use less fuel due to better mileage, simpler package rather than heavy batteries and less cost out of the door at initial purchase.
