Default Sport Mode Shifting Question

My '12CS now has 2000 miles on it so I decided to have some fun.
In Sport mode (and automatic) , I was doing about 30 mph and floored it. It moved out very nicely but only shifted to the next gear at the red line. It went from 2000 rpm to 7000 rpm w/o a shift....Is this normal behavior in Sport Mode?

Not sure if you're asking why it didn't shift before redline (it shouldn't if you kept it floored), or why it didn't kickdown when you floored it. Kickdown would depend on what gear you started out in. If you started in 2nd at 30mph or slightly above it might not downshift to 1st but would just pull all the way to redline in 2nd if you kept your foot down. Starting in 3rd or above, it should have kicked down to a lower gear.

BTW, your V8 makes peak power at 6500, the tach redlines at 6600 rpm; I doubt you saw 7000......

Thanks for the explanation. I was going around 25-30 mph in Sport Mode and I suspect that I was in second. That would explain no kickdown. Did not expect to see it go to redline without an an upshift. If I had been in manual, I would have shifted a little before the 6500 rpm mark. Thanks.

I know that on my previous gen if you are in manual shift mode it will hold the gear you are in if you stomp it vs kick down if it's in auto.

Doesn't the rev limiter kick in at red line?

No problem. Something else you may notice is that when you get on the throttle hard and the transmission does kick down, whether in regular or sport mode, it will tend to stay in the lower gear for a few seconds even after you back off of the gas. For example, you take off aggressively in 3rd and the transmission downshifts to 2nd. Before you reach redline in 2nd you back off the throttle, but instead of the transmission responding right away with an upshift to 3rd again, it stays in 2nd spinning away at 5 or 6K rpm. I find this annoying, and instead of waiting for the transmission to respond I will flick the upshift paddle myself and override auto mode instead of roaring along like teenager who thinks he's cool unnecessarily revving his engine.

Well if you were letting off the gas for a corner but wanted that same gear a moment later comin out of a curve you'd be annoye if it went to 3rd so it goes both ways I guess. That's the problem with robot shifting.

Which is why I shift manually when driving aggressively. But your point is well taken.....

Mike, what you describe is exactly what happened. It was the first time that I floored it and therefore the first time that I experienced it. Will not do this in auto mode again...I am surprised that they would engineer it to stay at that RPM for several seconds after one let's off the gas. Hmmmm
THANKS.
